    OT - Laptop question
I've owned two laptops (Dell and Toshiba) and used another quite a bit (HP).

All of them have decals for letters in digits on thier keyboards.

Really cheap, After two years on the Dell the decals on the popular letters (E, S, N etc) started wearing off, and are now (3 years in) completely worn off.

(And btw, I hold Dell in very low regard, almost the same as an emachine. Lot of hype, but hit their qualtiy high very early in the decade, big decline since.)

Are theere any laptops that paint or imprint the letters on they kboard, rather than paste them on?

I have used my Dell Laptop for 3 years now, and the numbers and letters are all still looking like they did when I bought it. I use this thing full time.

I have an HP and can clearly see the marks on the keys from usage but all letters are perfect still.

      Here is a pic hooker.

The last time a representative from Autoform came into the office he had a laptop from Alienware. It had an illuminated keyboard, and was smoking fast on the forming simulations that usually eat up memory like Joey Chestnut eats hot dogs on the 4th of July. It looked really expensive but it did perform.

Do you scratch the keys instead of push them when you type?

Macs are definitely all class. They are worth the extra money.

By far no comparison. I really don't understand why you would want anything else but a mac. A lot of people bash them and I did as well until I got on one. I was hooked and no way I would ever own anything else. So much smoother...

It seems that you are looking for a laptop that will last for more than 3 years. You should not. The notebooks are designed to last for 3 years, so you should be expecting to throw it out once 3 years expire. If your laptop is still working than you should not be complaining about your keyboard but be rather thankful that you still can use it. Will you be happier in three years with a laptop that has a nice keyboard but dead LCD?

Agree. Macs also rarely encounter virus problems or all the buggy crap like Windows do.

Does Dell really suck like emachines?

I just bought a Dell XPS for only 329 and was debating whether to keep it or ebay it.

                                  Well, you're lucky.

I don't think I use mine more than most people. True (as some here know) I tend to be a little - uh - verbose sometimes, but this is the only sports forum I post on. In fact, other than on the ebay sellers board, i don't post anywhere.

I keep emails to a minimum. I do write descriptions for stuff I sell on ebay, but that's a very "sometime" thing, not regular.

And I will occassionally knock off a freelance story, or one on contract for a trade mag (for aspiring writers those very unglamorous mags often pay the best fees).

But compared to many others, no, I'd say my use is at worst, average.

The old clone desktop I have has the letter engraved on. They can do the same for laptops.

Well, the HP belongs to a lady I know and I don't think either she or her 9 yr old do much typing, just the usual stuff.

What I had to do is to make little tabs with peel off sticky paper and paste them on. Right now I see them on the E, the A, the S, the D, the C, the L. And I'll have to replace those, as the ink is wearing out.

I can speed type, and blindfolded. But sometimes I do type with one hand (NO, not for that reason - long past the age for autoeroticism) but becausse I do sometimes check and reply to email before getting out of bed, and also list on ebay while holding the item (the collectible item, wisenheimers) in one hand for checking.

(And, porn sites will infect your computer - virus programs are overrated, and if you don't update the definitions weekly almost useless. Also, I once - around 15 yrs ago - sold XXX videos to video stores all over SoCal, and hardly need any more of it. BTW, at that time a lot of the male porn stars had AIDS, virtually all of them are raging bisexuals.)
Capitalist Pig said here a few weeks ago that he wishes compmuters never had been invented. I'm not sure I disagree with that, altho the expanded choices and breakdown of the mass propaganda media wouldn't have happened without it.

I have a newer Toshiba Satelling too, and haven't used it enough to tell. But, the letter on mine are decals.

You have to look close, and shine a flashlite on them. They look painted on with a cursory inspection. But I'll bet they are decals. I thought the ones on my Dell were engraved or painted --- until they started to wear off!

No, I speed type, leaned in HS, which was several centuries ago. I know one can adjust the keys to lightness of touch, but i don't wanna make 'em too light or you get too many mistakes.

When my dog types on the laptop tho he does scratch the keys. Think that's it?

Maybe you had an older one, pre-2003. Michael Dell apparently started cheapening up his product about mid-decade. Yet the orignal hype wears on - but the harsh reality tells us that it's now sold at Walmart, whereas at one time you had to call in or buy online, and the snooty little sh1ts acted like they were doing you a favor by selling you one of their units.

First thing I'd noticed with my new Dell (bought spring of '05) was that without the cord, the adapter, the screen was noticeably less bright. As it was my first laptop I figured that was normal.

Now I know it wasn't. It was greedy Michael building junky products that one would have to buy replacement parts for. The battery is still OK, but for how long? And still OK 'cause i rarely use it without the adapter.

Then, about a year and a half after I bought it, the adapter plug (to the unit) started to slip out of its slot, which bizarrely (IMO) is located at the back of the laptop.

I put up with it for all that time, but last week it finally would not fit in at all. So just this week bought a chinese made adapter on ebay, (Everything's Chinese now - when is Charlie Chan going to run for President?)

Laptops are fragile, for their size asked to do too many things. I understand that. But I still think the Dell has been grossly overhyped for years. And still is.

I just bought a Dell XPS for only 329 and was debating whether to keep it or ebay it.
Mine does. Altho I have not had, admittedly, the screen and batteries problems I've read about ad infinitum on the webssie dellsucks.com.

(and i realize that all major companies have a "suck" site from unhappy users, but i was surprised at the size of Dell's, given that even IT people (they don't repair pcs) still jump and salute when Dell is mentioned))

                                                Yes, I've heard that.

Tho a friend in photojournalism (who told me in '98 when I bouhght my first pc to go with Apple, I ignored him) has had a Mac for almost five years now, no problem of significance.

If the aliens are gone, and if I don't go ASUS (which a Pc repair guy tells me is the best pc right now) I will go with an Apple. Shoulda woulda coulda 10 years ago

BTW, the first pc I bought, a destop clone, put together in a little shop in San Diego's South Bay, still works. I added memory, and replaced a usb plug, that's all. Tho it's balky, mainly because i made the error of downloading a "free" antiviruss program from verizon (and relative works there, i get the dsr service gratis). Even after removing the software it still balks at opening some programs.

Think I'll get it fixed, most prob free pc I ever had. A guy I know in TJ will do it cheap for me. (As soon as he gets out of La Ocho, the tijuana jail, for stealing pcs off a walmart truck).

                                                  crazy and illini, i agree.

I've never owned one, but have used them, and know people who have 'em, everyone seems basically satisfied.

That is likely to be my next one, even tho I know they cost more than a comparable pc. But are far less trouble prone than Billy Gates's stuff.

It's just that you can't go into a store in buy one, as far as i know. Not even at fry's.

                                                    Thanks all for the replies.

I was kinda hoping someone would say, "hey go to this website, they sell a great little engraing tool for $20, and you can engrave the letter into the plastic keys just like you want them."

                                                    No such luck.

First thing I'd noticed with my new Dell (bought spring of '05) was that without the cord, the adapter, the screen was noticeably less bright. As it was my first laptop I figured that was normal.

my new one has power setting for a darker screen (battery saver) or full brightness when running on bat
