NEW YORK (AFP) — Alain Robert, best known as the "French Spider Man" for illegally climbing buildings and monuments around the world, on Thursday crawled up 52 stories of the New York Times skyscraper before police arrested him.
Robert, 45, said the goal of his stunt was to protest climate change.
Scores of slack-jawed New Yorkers who crammed the sidewalks below however were more interested in following his gravity-defying feat -- or judging his sanity.
"This man is crazy," said Chelsea, a young woman standing on the corner of 8th Avenue and 41st Street who could not keep her eyes off Robert.
The Renzo Piano-designed building is 228 meter (748 feet) high, not counting its antenna.
Halfway up the building's north wall Robert unveiled a green fluorescent banner that read: "Global warming kills more people than 9/11 every week."
Police handcuffed Robert when he got to the roof and put him under arrest, an NYPD spokesman told AFP.
"I am climbing with my bare hands as a peaceful way to create support for far greater and urgent action from world leaders on global warming," Robert said in a statement sent out before he began the climb.
In mid-April Robert scaled a top Hong Kong hotel, also to highlight the fight against global warming. Police arrested him when he reached the roof, but he was later released without charge.
Robert was kicked out of Brazil in February after security guards prevented him from climbing the 46-story Edificio Italia building in central Sao Paulo.
In 2007 Roberto was deported from China for illegally conquering its tallest building, only to have officials invite him back in November to legitimately climb a mountain in central China as a tourist attraction.
Robert boasts on his website that he has made it to the top of 70 buildings and monuments around the world in his 12-year career.

Wow, what a crazy SOB.
Kind of cool that he was able to do it though, without killing himself or someone else.

That guy is a nut. I couldn't imagine trying to cling to the side of a building. Beside climbing skill....you need super strong mental abilities. Don't think you can panic once your 40 stories up.
