Now technically Carson is a part of Los Angeles, but when they tell someone from somewhere else that they live in Los Angeles, that person will automatically assume the person lives in Hollywood/Santa Monica/Beverly Hills etc.

Among New Yorkers, JJ is right; New York City refers to specifically Manhattan. We do specifically say "The Bronx", "Queens", and "Brooklyn" to distinguish them from "The City".

However, in terms of taxes, all 5 boroughs (I believe) fall under New York City.

So I guess both perspectives are "right"; it just depends on which perspective you are using.

The Knicks Play In NY City
Mets Play 40 minutes from downtown Manahattan and is no where near a City
Nets will be playing in Brooklyn and nowhere near NY CITY
Yanks play in Bronx and in the fukkin ghetto and is a little closer to City

Jets and Giants play in NJ and they even refer to them as NY CITY

The other boroughs of NY are their own mini cities really on a small scale

Trick. I drive these 5 boroughs every week. I can see people making a case that staten and queens are not part of the city, because the landscape is totally different. But saying the bronx is not nyc is dumb. Nypd officers there. Nyc transit is there. Everything in the bronx is NYC.

That's not true. When we go out of town we say we're from ny. Only to other nyers we distiguish which borough. Most out of towners don't know the difference.
