Talent down? If anything, the talent level is up. Also new rule changes have promoted scoring:

1) Two-line pass
2) Player protection = more penalties
3) Puck Handling behind the net by goalies leads to transition
4) Rule changes on goalie jersey size (Roy was infamous for this, wearing XXXL sweaters)

Goalies were awful in your era Gold. 80s and 90s anyone could score goals. Pads have gotten bigger though over time which has made it tough....I see what VI is trying to say but overall goals per game has dropped a bit since the lockout.

The game drastically changed when they took clutching and grabbing out of the game to cater to the American viewer who need goals to tune in. A true shame because it was a great game at one time, but like pretty much everything else, it was dropped down a notch to make the dumb fans happy.

Just look at a goalie in the 80's - he looks like a ref with an extra couple layers of sweats on.

The 90's were home to 5-6 years of the trap..scoring fell off a cliff.

The crowd definitely enjoys the extra scoring, it's good for the NHL and good for hockey
