It's called "leveling". If wounded people bring you down below their level, then they have a very short feeling of self worth. Only to find the need to do it again and again.

It also sounds like he is a slight "wound healer". This is a noble self-image of giving back, by trying to "help" people with their problems because it's easier than repairing themselves.
