He didn't at first. I have told the story of how he ate and partied in Akron a few times, and I had the same bartenders/servers as him twice, and both times they mentioned that I was a better tipper than he was (unsolicited compliments. Twice in one week had me wondering). I am poor, but I always take care of my bartenders and servers.

My explanation is that he had very little experience with restaurants as a child (poor). He was usually comped (traveling sports teams, All-Star teams). I have to admit he improved.
