Daryl Hawks, sports anchor for NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5, was found dead today in his hotel room in Atlanta, where he had gone to cover tonight’s Bulls playoff game.
Hawks joined Channel 5 in July 2008, replacing Ryan Baker, who’d jumped to CBS-owned WBBM-Channel 2.
Hawks was in Atlanta to cover tonight’s Game 6 of the Bulls-Hawks NBA playoff series, staying at the Omni Hotel inside the CNN Center, which is near Philips Arena.
The cause of death is unknown at this time, but Atlanta police said there is no reason to believe foul play was involved. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating the death.
“We are all stunned right now. Daryl was a great member of our sports team, and was so excited about covering the Bulls during this playoff run,” said Frank Whittaker, Station Manager and Vice President of News, on NBC5’s website.
Channel 5 suffered the loss of another young sports anchor, Darrian Chapman, in 2002. Chapman collapsed and died while playing hockey on Chicago’s Near West Side. He was 37.
Hawks was a native of Buffalo, N.Y., an ex-Marine and a graduate of Buffalo State College. He briefly played semipro football with the Lockport Invaders in New York.
He is survived by his wife, Sandy, and two children.
