#18They will not be able to collect from you anywhere outside of the US. But if you run they will destroy your credit for a good 10 years.
What you should do is contact them and negotiate a discount and payment plan similar to bankruptcy. The best and cleanest is to negotiate a discount with a lump sum payment. Go to Dad or some other family memeber and get them to bail you out.Comment -

#20I can catergorically say the debt wont follow you. In Europe the credit system is done on a name and address basis, the USA is the only country that links one number(ssn) to your credit rating(which is why identity theft is rife, i.e. get the number and away you go). In europe credit is decided on length at address and credit rating. If youre going to europe and you know youll be there a while, as long as you never divulge your ssn they wont know who you are, I know quite a few english lads that have run up credit and not paid it and gone home, its never followed them. To take it one step further, I know lads who have stitched up capital one and gone back to England and got a capital one card. The bottom line is theyre not as global as you think.Comment -

#21Originally posted by pavyracerI beg to differ. If you go to Europe they will track you down. I know people that are still making $50 a month payments for their credit card debts in the USA when they went back home to Europe.
With regards to the credit card companies - get a PO Box for friends, family, and new companies you might need to have a US address for once you're in Europe. Do not forward your mail from your current address. Do not give the credit card companies your new information or any way of contacting you. If you leave, tell your family if someone calls for you, they shouldn't say a peep.
If at all possible, negotiate, negotiate, negotiate. I had $120K in debt, most of it from hospital bills. Never paid it and it's long since off my credit report. My credit is now 800 and I don't buy jackshit unless I can pay cash for it.
I've been here almost 15 years and if anyone called me or ****ed with me I'd simply tell them to kiss my Lilly white ass. I've got a buddy who stiffed Capitol One (so did I), and they were sending things to his parents until his parents started sending the letters back as undeliverable. He called Capitol One once to see about making a payment plan with them, but they wanted all his new information and he ended up telling them to f*ck off.
So if you wanna run - run like hell and don't look back. But it probably won't be nearly as easy as you might think. How long do you plan on staying over a lousy 20K debt? If it's a lifetime, give it serious thought.
Anyhow, before you make your choice - watch The 25th Hour.
"And maybe one day, years from now, long after I'm dead and gone, reunited with your dear mother, you gather your whole family together and tell them the truth, who you are, where you come from. You tell them the whole story. And then you ask them if they know how lucky they are to be there. "Comment -

#27Originally posted by smallonAnd I beg to differ with you. I not only owed credit card companies and hospitals, but also the IRS. I tried negotiating everything but I had a serious accident and didn't work full-time for years. The IRS waved what I owed them once they found out I lived in Thailand because in their own words, "they deemed my debt noncollectable."

#32The United States has become a corrupt police state. If you run, the Feds will find you faster than you can say, "George Bush!"
It's sad but true. Americans happily and ignorantly gave up their liberty when they approved every new draconian law on the table to combat drugs and terror. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are going to help. In fact, they'll follow the path of human nature and abuse the new found power given to the governmentComment -
