I've decided I am going to raise a Thoroughbred

Spent 250 dimes today on new borns. Male and Female. Will raise them in my back yard. will feed them apples, oats, carrots, tren, tren, lots of tren.

The male will be bred for racing purposes only. The filly will get fille by the stud when I retire it.

I have been around alot of horse people for decades and even though I'm just a novice compared to them when knowing about the horse industry, a little savvy has rubbed off on me.

First off,good for you if you are rich beyond belief and can spend 250K like it's expendable fun money.

Have you been around tracks and horse people alot in your life?

Did you ever think of taking the syndicate route where you and a bunch of partners pooled your resources together to hedge against pitfalls that may take place?You start out safe where you can have some fun owning a share of a horse to get your feet wet and see if you like the business.Man,those vet,feed and transportation costs can run into a fortune.

Even though the racing industry has taken a hit from casinos being built everywhere,here is the plus side in my opinion.Most tracks are turning into racinos and card rooms where alot of the gambling revenue goes to supplementing race purses.It's common to see cheap claiming horses winning a race where the entire purse share of winnings is what they were claimed for.Of course there are tons of expenses that go toward keeping the horse racing.

Thoroughbreds are pretty damn fragile,high strung and moody.They aren't the easiest horses to take care of or figure out why they don't want to perform.

You can find beautiful and sound claimers from decent bloodlines for a few grand that are already trained which cost a fortune to do so.If you have a bush league track like Fonner Park in Nebraska or Les Boise Park in Boise,Idaho a person can get a nice thoroughbred in it's prime for a cheap price to raise in your backyard.There are bush league tracks scattered all over the country like that.They have rules where you just can't remove them from the track and quit racing them as soon as you claim them but there are loopholes.You can claim them toward the end of a season or have the trainer say they need a rest from a nagging injury etc.

I was to a track in Saskatoon,Saskatchewan Canada ''Marquis Downs''where not long ago when the american dollar was strong and the Canadian dollar weak,you could have claimed beautiful horses for $1,500 that were great grandsired by Northern Dancer.

Then you have harness racing where you can get standardbreds for that cheap too.The Amish colony members buy them because they are young,sound and are already trained and they pay pennies on a dollar what the horse is actually worth to them.

I'm not sure if I would have the balls to go the ground floor route like you starting out with a backyard hobbie farm.My best of wishes go out to you and I wish you the best of luck!

I can add that I know someone around my town that raises racers and they are no where near 250k.

I hope you are joking about this Deuce. Or is it JJ? Either way, I hope you aren't serious about blowing that kind of money on thoroughbreds,but if you really did, I hope it pays off.
