Disgraced sprinter Montgomery facing heroin charge: report

NORFOLK, Virginia (AFP) — Disgraced sprinter Tim Montgomery has been indicted on heroin distribution charges, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported on Thursday.
The newspaper reported that Montgomery, 33, was arrested Wednesday on a sealed indictment that charged him with conspiracy to distribute the drug.
According to the report, Montgomery, who has had a history of legal problems, was accused in the indictment of dealing more than 100 grams of heroin between 2007 and this year in Virginia.
The newspaper said that federal authorities didn't publicly announce the arrest, but that Montgomery was in court on Wednesday and a magistrate judge ordered him jailed pending a bond hearing on Monday.
Montgomery was already facing sentencing next month in a New York-based check-fraud scheme. He pleaded guilty in that case in 2007.
Steve Riddick, the onetime athletics star's former coach and a 1976 Montreal Olympic gold medallist, stood trial on charges in the check scam case and was convicted in May of 2007 of bank fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
Former sprint star Marion Jones, Montgomery's former partner, is serving a sentence for perjury after admitting lying to authorities about her knowledge of the check-fraud case as well as about her own use of performance enhancing drugs.
Montgomery retired from athletics in late 2005 after receiving a two-year ban for doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. All of his placings since March 31, 2001, were stricken, including his 100m world record of 9.78 seconds from 2002.
