#5Complete rhetoric... While this is a potentially dangerous situation it's being completely blown out of proportion by the media whom understands little to nothing about radiation exposure. Don't get me wrong, Japan is fukked right now. There is no downplaying what they're going through. This event will change the course of that country, and likely the world to a small extent, forever. But the fears of the "nuclear meltdown" are rhetoric driven. Japan will not and cannot evacuate the whole island. Even if they could, it would be the wrong thing to do b/c even if the reactor cores are exposed and melt the danger zone is limited for several reasons. Regardless my heart goes out to these people and I hope they recover soon.Comment -

#7Journalists and their editors should be made to answer for some of the crap they spout.
If I believed everything the Daily Mail has printed in the past, I should already have died from Ebola, Chicken Flu, Swine Flu. Not to mention that the value of my home would be negative and that my local government would have wasted twice the national GDP (all on services for immigrants).
This is sensationalist claptrap.Comment -

A) it doesn't say to evacuate the whole island
B) the article is from the Daily Mail - so there isz zero journalistic credibility to itComment -

#12I work at a nuclear facility and of these plants will melt down, it will not be as bad as chernobyl. I live how they have two comparisions. Chernobyl and three mile island. What will happen if the reactors melt down is basically nothing. If the containment vessel is not breached then that melted reactor can sit there forever and not worry about radiation spewing out everywhere. Remember three mile island melted down and the site is still open and producing energy. Obviously they have different reactors then the one that melted. If there was a breach in the containment vessel then there is a problem. But who really knows what condition the containment vessels are in anyway. Tokyo power who owns the nuke plant doesn't let anyone know the true condition of the reactors. So I guess time will tellComment -

#15It's problematic because the consequences are complex which feeds confusion and sensational news reporting.
The lack of and slow release of information by the Japanese Government and the TEPCO has compounded this, and the fact that the accident is still unfolding.
Now you have situations like panick buying of salt in China. It's unknown if this is because they believe the iodine content will somehow help them or because they feel salt supplies will be contaminated, but no doubt heresay cell-texts are feeding this panick.
I think the short-term threats are overstated (as long as the situation does not get worse), but the long-term threats will only become apparent after the short-term situation becomes more "stable."
Example, already large amounts of Cesium and Iodine have surely been released into the air. Iodine isotopes will decay within a month or two but Cesium isotopes have a 30-year half life so in 60 years 25% of the release will still be in the environment.
Small amounts scattered over large areas will precipitate into waterways and the ocean, for example.
Fish are "accumulators" which will accumulate Cesium in their muscle tissue and organs. Japan gets close to half of it's dietary animal protein from Fish. I'd expect that even if the radiation is contained completely as of today, the amount already released will be enough to elevate fish to very unsafe levels for years to come.
Also, Japan has a growing problem of a "lack of young people" as a growing segment of their population is elderly as birth rates have been declining there. This is due to both choices to not have children but also low fertility rates. This will NOT help that situation.
These are just two examples of the long term consequences here.Comment -

Jesus Christ 600,000 radioactive rods blown sky high! Fukushima 3 containment vessel has a huge crack leaking plutonium directly into the atmosphere. The other three plants have blown up and are melting down. Low levels off radioactivity has already reached the Pacific coast and the bad stuff is not even here yet. Not even mention the land area within 100 miles of the plant has been destroyed forever. Cancers will increase 100 fold all over the planet. And you think its all an over reaction.Comment -
