Just read that piece on ESPN.com and good for him. He was polite, yet firm. Even added in a dagger at the about never losing to the Fab Five.

Hey Jalen, as great as you guys were individually...you never won jackshit.

      SCOREBOARD!

        I see Jalen's point

When he was 18 he though Duke Black Players were Uncle Tom's

        Jalen was honest in documentary

true, but if you see him talk about it now, he won't say that he was foolish to say that, he tap dances around it and basically confirms he still thinks that,

Everybody knows that Duke is a 'white' team.

But it's not considered politically correct to point it out.

Why is Uncle Tom even bad to say? Grow some fukkin thick skin. Its not a patty cake world anymore. Call me a honky or a cracker, I wouldn't bat an eye. I don't give a fukk. Jalen spoke his mind and what he thought as an inner city kid growing up with nothing. Why are they even called the Fab Five though? They didn't win shit.

Do you blame Duke for recruiting athletes that haven't been in trouble?

Duke is a private university, a business, and has an image to keep.

It's no different than Sony or Microsoft or Apple only wanted to recruit and hire people with good character, no past troubles...

are you not aware of the historical context of the term?

perhaps you should read uncle tom's cabin.

I don't understand it from a racial standpoint. Why do black people call other black people who are successful and educated Uncle Toms? Shouldn't black people want more of their race to become educated and become more like "uncle toms" to enhance their race and rid the stereotype of blacks. I feel like they are always trying to claim whites put their race down and not letting them progress but this term seems to call out blacks who may come from well to do and educated families? I don't get it

One of the worst problems we have in this country is that someone can say something completely stupid, and if it's repeated often enough, we come to believe it's the truth.

Here's a list of players Mike Krzyzewski recruited at Duke....

                              David Henderson '83-'86
                              Weldon Williams '83-'86
                              Billy King '85-88
                              Robert Brickey '86-'90
                              Phil Henderson '87-'90
                              Antonio Lang '91-94
                              Mike Chappell '97-98
                              Chris Carrawell '97-'00
                              Will Avery '98-99
                              Elton Brand '98-'99
                              Chris Duhon '01-'04
                              Daniel Ewing '02-'05
                              Sheldon Williams '03-'05
                              Sean Dockery '03-'05
                              Demarcus Nelson '05-'08

They are all black kids who went to typical public high schools. Some in small rural towns, some in inner cities. Antonio Lang went to the same high school in Alabama as former Kentucky "student"-athlete DeMarcus Cousins. Of course, Lang was the school's valedictorian when he graduated.

And this list doesn't include Kyrie Irving, Andre Dawkins, Nate James, Corey Maggette, Lance Thomas, Elliot Williams, Ricky Price, Kenny Blakeney, Michael Thompson and several others who went to parochial schools that hundreds of inner city black kids like Jalen Rose get basketball scholarships from every year.

Jalen Rose is full of complete bullshit. At no point during his time at Duke has Coach K been unwilling to recruit more than the black kids from middle/upper class parents like Gerald Henderson or Grant Hill. It's just that the players he recruits, black or white, need to able to read and write at a proficiency level higher than a fifth grader when they get to campus, something Jalen Rose and many other kids who weren't recruited by Duke would have struggled to show they could do on a consistent basis.

One could argue Duke's academic standards have declined for recruits in recent years. And many do, and decry it as a negative. But that's bullshit too. Coach K is dammed if he do, dammed if he don't. If he recruits great students, he's accused of being a racist and going after Uncle Toms. He recruits inner-city kids and he's lowering standards to win. You can't have it both ways.

The fact is Coach K recruits kids with mental toughness. Kids who aren't scared to get their asses kicked in practice. Kids who don't pout like a spoiled cry-baby or talk back to the coach any time he gets yelled at. Kids like Jalen Rose.

If Jalen Rose thinks Grant Hill is an Uncle Tom because his parents are college graduates with successful careers, I guess that means Jalen's kids are Uncle Tom's then too. And I guess if the only black kids Duke recruited then were Uncle Toms, well then that would make his good friend and teammate Chris Webber and Uncle Tom, because Duke recruited Webber. And Kobe Bryant before it was clear he was going pro. And John Wall.

Jalen Rose is a bitter little bitch and I hope none of the folks here at SBR are dumb enough to fall for that ass-clown's clueless perceptions in life.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

google the chris rock bit about "blacks vs. ni----". a whole lot of truth to it. i'm proud to be black and made a good living coming from the projects. problem is the projects don't like it when one of their own makes it, so they go from being one of them to a uncle tom.

A large part of the black population doesn't accept the white society, which treats them like sh*t. So they keep to themselves, and create their own brotherhood. From their perspective, Hill grew up as a privileged kid. There is no controversy here. Just two different perspectives. Rose is being honest. Hill's answer is 'politically correct'. So what do you prefer? Somebody who tells it like it is, or somebody who tells it like it's supposed to be?

Its too deep to get into on SBR and would take me some time to explain i could imagine this being confusing to someone from the outside looking in. Maybe i'll come back to this at a later time.

They see them the same way white kids see the teacher's pet.

To poor blacks, speaking proper English, wearing appropriate dress, and behaving in a civil and "classy" manner is akin to kissing up to the teacher. They think these blacks are only doing it to appease the white man and his rules. And that they wouldn't do these things if they didn't think they had to in order to make money or get ahead in life.

Many black people in this country believe they are entitled to a job, money, housing, and shelter, and that they don't have to change their behavior to get these things. They don't understand shit about free market capitalism. They don't understand that developing talent, skills, and education, and carrying oneself with confidence and dignity, is how one becomes a success in America. All they understand is that their ancestors were treated abhorrently, because that's all the liberals in this country want them to understand. The last thing Democrats in America need is the black man reaching his full potential and realizing that he is no longer dependent on the state and social welfare programs to be successful in life. For once he realizes that breaking the bonds of this dependency is the black man's last step in achieving true freedom and equality in America, then they will stop voting for liberal politicians, and the Democratic Party and all their power will be destroyed.

don't have enough time to give a full explanation, but think of it similar to the "build and destroy" thing the media does with celebrities. they root for you to make it and when you do, they want you to fall back down.

friends and business contacts of mine that made the transisiton from housing projects to boardrooms find it difficult to balance the 2 worlds. i know i can still go into any ghetto and feel welcomed, but for others they just can't do both. either they try to prove they are still hood and get caugh up in some b.s. or they just turn their back completely on where they came from and get shunned.

hill doesn't fall into the hood category. he was raised in a nice stable enviornment and shouldn't have to apologize for being who he is. the guy has been a class act throughout his professional career and has been through a lot. i still can't give him a pass for that awful high top fade from the duke years though. lol

So they keep to themselves, and create their own brotherhood. From their perspective, Hill grew up as a privileged kid. There is no controversy here. Just two different perspectives. Rose is being honest. Hill's answer is 'politically correct'. So what do you prefer? Somebody who tells it like it is, or somebody who tells it like it's supposed to be?
no it not "two different" perspectives, maybe that how as an inner city kid Rose viewed it at 18, and that's fine.

Yes Duke recruits mostly from the pool of people who would normally attend a Private University like Duke. But for Jalen to say that any black players who go there are "Uncle Toms" is way out of line.
