It was bound to happen where players making huge guaranteed salaries and signup bonuses were going to figure there is no incentive to kill yourself winning and denying yourself life's pleasures.

I think golfers like Duvall and John Daly fall into this category in a way too but with Zito it's different because it's a team sport where people depend on you and you get paid whether you are good or bad and in golf it doesn't work that way.

It will be interesting to find out how such a top notch pitcher like Zito could decay overnight.Sure,there are mystery injuries that can happen but my guess is that the guy is comfortable with the amount of money he can squeeze out of his contract and wants to live happily ever after not having to discipline himself to be a good pitcher anymore.

I can see why alot of guys no longer feel they have a hunger to perform and win when you have 10 lifetimes of spending money given to you with no obligations to earn it.

I don't think a golfer like Duval falls into this category.He had a golf swing that was unorthodox but he used it to become the best golfer in the world at one point and then it all fell apart on him.Kinda like what happened to Ian Baker Finch.Also the mental part of the game was totally shot because of this loss of confidence and that is why duval struggles to break 80 now.
