While I agree with you, Pacquiao and the boxing press pretend that he won a 154 pound belt. They pretend he holds some kind of record for belts in different weight classes. He carefully chooses which belt holders to challenge and then fights them at a catch weight though. How you can win a 154 pound belt by fighting at a 150 catch weight is beyond me.
Martinez fought at middleweight (160) tonight, but he has been a LMW (154) most of his career.
I agree with you that it's not really fair to make the comparison, but then Pacquiao shouldn't make the claim that he is a 154 pound world champion. Martinez would smoke Pacquiao at 154.

Wrong. Manny pacquiao is claiming to be a 154 title holder as he fought the 154 pound belt holder antonio margarito who weighed in at over 170 pounds on fight night.
Sergio fights at 154 also.
If manny is going to strut his stuff as one of the greatest of all time and a 154 pound champ than he must fight a legitament opponent.
Manny has been fighting bums for the last 2-3 fights.

Martinez can't even make 154 anymore. And Pacquiao has never fought at 154. He fought at 150 catchweight and couldn't even make that, he weighed in at 145. What your saying is the equivalent of saying Vitali Klitchko would kill Martinez. Off course he would because its not a fair fight.

Actually, it is nothing like that. Pacquiao claims to be a world champion at 154. Martinez fights at 154 and 160. I think he would gladly go back down to 154 to fight Pacquiao. Recently he was making an offer to fight someone at a catch weight of 155. For Pacquiao, I am sure he could get back down to 154.
When Martinez claims to be a heavyweight belt holder, then you you can use your analogy. Until then, don't forget that Pacquiao and his team are constantly crowing about how many different weight classes he has won belts in, and they claim he is a world champion at 154.
I agree it would not be a fair fight though.

Pacquiao claims to be a 154 champion because he did win a 154 world title but he already vacated the title (which now Saul Alverez has) without defending it once. Why you may ask? Because it is impossible for Pacquiao to even weight 154 the day before the fight and then rehydrate 10-15 pound the day of the fight is a huge disadvantage. He tried it once against Margarito and was seriously hurt in the 6th round from a body shot and decided that it was too much of an advantage for a opponent whos a natural 154.
Pacquiao also won titles at 112 and 122 so should he have to fight at that weight as well when someone calls him out? No because 1) he doesnt care about the title at that weight anymore and 2) when your the bigger draw you get to chose what weight you want to fight at. I'm sure Pacquiao would fight Martinez in a heartbeat at 147 however Martinez has never been a PPV fighter and it wouldnt not make fiscal sense. And Sergio is 36 and has sais he wants to retire in the next year or two. Martinez has also said he'd rather fight Mayweather than Pacquiao.
So to sum it up Martinez isn't even worth Pacquiao's time because he isnt a PPV attraction and neither of them have a belt at 154. At 147 Pac would KTFO outta Martinez who lost to Margarito and we all know what Pac did to Margarito.

You do realize Pacquiao beating Margarito as a "Light Middleweight" was a stunt for a pointless accolade... right? Belts mean nothing, money talked loud with this one. Manny and Margarito had a combined total of 1 career fight as a Middleweight. Neither were even ranked in the top 20 of any organization.
Bottom line is, Manny is way too small for Sergio Martinez. Even Sergio himself has shied away from the fight several times for this very reason. Sergio won't take the fight unless it's at 160. Manny won't take the fight unless it's at 150 or less. They're both choosing to avoid the other. And using belts as an argument here is Those things are worthless nowadays.

i agree, boxing belts are so pointless. the only thing that matters is just about whose beaten who. who the actual "champ" is at the moment means nothign.

Anything Pacman does will do 1 million. Martinez brings about 10,000 buys on his own. He isn't a draw. Much like Berto. Solid fighter, no loyal following.

Floyd vs Martinez would be great though.

Pacquiao has gone from fighting as a superfeatherweight (130lbs) to a light middleweight catch fight (150lbs) in his last 8 fights.
This is what fighters do they start their careers shedding weight and fighting smaller fighters and develop their skills as they climb weight classes till they find a class that best suits their frame and height. Margarito and Williams are middleweight fighters who have been fighting as welterweights, Martinez is a lightheavy weight who has been fighting as a middleweight.
No comparison at all here Pac will plateau as a welterweight because it is the class that best fits his height and bone structure, Martinez will plateau as a light heavyweight.
Absolutely no reason for Pac to fight someone with an 8" reach advantage, 3" height advantage and a 30lb natural body weight difference.
If you guys want to watch a 140lb man fight a 170lb man you should watch the UFC

Ok so than you're basically saying the title he won against margarito was bogus and he shouldn't be a 8 time world champion.

people are already trying to match up manny pacquiao vs martinez but yet realize what weight difference it truly makes for people who are short and tall.manny going up to 154 to fight sergio martinez is suicide and big risk.manny can never reach the limit of 154lbs. not at his age.manny is 32 years old.while martinez who's older has built more muslce mass and weight for a guy whos 36.and rehydrates up to 180lbs.manny vs sergio martinez total missmatch.martinez beating pacquiao will prove nothing.unless manny willing to put more muscle mass which i doubt he can at this time..here is a chart of the ideal weights should be for height..
I am 14 y/o 5ft4" & I weigh 162lbs .. I dont think this is suitable or my age and/or height, how much should I weigh? PLEASE HELP! Thanks x

You do realize that Martinez walks around at 170lbs and pacquiao walks around at 145lbs right?
And no his accomplishment was not meaningless but just because he accomplished fighting Margarito (former welterweight) at 150lbs in no way means that he should now be expected to fight middleweights who are coming down to junior middleweight.
Roy Jones Jr. beat John Ruiz for a heavyweight title was that meaningless too? did he ever fight as a heavyweight again? Pretty obvious that Lennox Lewis would have killed RJ Jr. does that make him any less of a fighter?
Being a great "pound for pound" fighter does not mean that you should be expected to beat anyone no matter how much bigger and stronger than you they are.

They can punch harder with the "pillows" than you could with anything. Just because you don't watch it doesn't mean other people don't give a fuk and as this thread clearly shows its doing pretty well.

Pavlik weighed nowhere near 190 you are making shit up. Martinez-Pac will never happen which is fine because the size difference is stupid anyways. Hell the size difference was stupid with Margarito to but Pac still won because of speed. Martinez is a badass, but he doesn't really have any good fights available at 160. If he moves to 168 he won't do to well.

Dude, Manny Pacquiao is TOO SMALL for Sergio Martinez. It's really that simple.
They have agreed to fight him if he comes down to 150. But it's not likely, because A) Bob Arum will still try to negotiate another fight B) it's too much of a disadvantage to Martinez. Why do you think he's campaigning at 160 now?
There's some good fights to be made at 168. Campaign for that.
Lucian Bute is available. Mikkel Kessler will be available soon. Andre Dirrell should be available. Andre Ward, Froch, Abraham.
All good fights. Martinez will be fighting bigger men, but hey, Pavlik bloated to 190, right? No big deal to fight guys that rehydrate to 180.
