Washington State suspended Klay Thompson (above) after the junior star guard was arrested last night for investigation of marijuana possession during a traffic stop. His SUV was pulled over about 10:56 p.m. on College Hill because a headlight was out.
The officer smelled marijuana. Police impounded his car and found 1.95 grams of marijuana in the vehicle.
Thompson was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.
In a statement released this morning, coach Ken Bone said: "We are aware of the situation involving Klay and will continue to gather information. Klay will be suspended for Saturday's game against UCLA and the situation will continue to be evaluated throughout the weekend. Until that time neither myself nor the team will have further comment."
Bud Withers spoke with Thompson's father this morning and Mychal Thompson said: "I've been in that situation many, many times and chose not to do it. You've got to be better than that, you've got to be smarter. I told him I was extremely disappointed in him. He let the team down, he let the school down and he let himself and his family down."
Thompson's suspension likely dooms WSU's chances of upsetting the Bruins and may spoil their hopes of earning an at-large berth for the NCAA tournament.
