I think they only use drones on land since the air field needs to be near by. Not sure they're launching drones off the deck of a carrier though

Plus, the human eye element is probably better when looking for small boats in the vast sea.

We talking about pirates here. Bullets should be sufficient, and it's cheaper. It's not like they're out there to blow up a battle ship. After all, why have trained Soldiers if your not going to use them, while Pirates are terrorizing our US citizens.

Tactical Failure, Should have been resolved much quicker, but it is a complex situation. I feel bad for the dead's families, and hope that we come up with some real techniques tactics and procedures to dictate how these operations are to be executed.

Did anyone catch this line in the news?

As the U.S. special forces team cleared the vessel, it discovered two pirates who already were dead. Another two were killed by U.S. personnel, one by gunfire and one by a knife,

One by knife

They were seals you dummy. You think they approached the pirates boat in broad daylight from above the water? The seals left from the destroyer swam underwater in the middle of the night and got him with a knife. That's what they train for.

The funny thing is that these yachts or sailboats have GPS. If I'm on a boat and I see on the GPS fukking Somalia I tell the captain to get the fukk outta here you will get us killed moron!

They were Navy seals who boarded, obviously trained for hand to hand combat in close quarters. There were 17 alive Somalis, 2 dead, 4 dead Americans, thats 23 bodies + the Navy seals on one yacht = close quarters.....def hardcore though

Sorry, I dont post dumb shit and sorry, but I am informed. I wish I could say the same for you. OP's thread is referring to Obama beefing up our presense in light of the latest incident. In case you didnt realize this thread was started at 4pm, hostages have already been confirmed dead for over 12 hours, so the military action in question is now pertaining to thwarting future attacks, on ANY nation's citizens and/or property, by Somali pirates, it's not for the purpose of saving the 4 dead hostages and not for catching the pirates responsible, well, because they've already been caught

. The incident was unfortunate, but it's over. Yes, we rightfully tried to intervene because THEY WERE AMERICANS. But again, it's now over. Just with the Maersk Alabama incident 2 years ago, an American was held hostage, so we rightfully intervened. That incident was resolved and it was end of story. Obviously the Somali pirates are out of control and are a threat to ANYONE who travels that part of the world. So again, it's not an American problem, but a problem of all civilized countries you use those shipping lanes for commerce as well as their citizens for leisure. So the question still stands, why is just America's responsibility to rid the world of tyranny? Jimmy0607 you might want to pull out a map and try to find the Indian Ocean in proximity to the United States. It's a little closer to other superpower's backyard rather than ours.

The Navy's already out there anyways, with all the raucous going on in the middle east. Only makes sense to send the Marines too, since the Navy Seals are limited to urgent situations. Plus, all them Marines coming back from Iraq are dying for things to do. As George W. Bush once said, "why have the strongest military in the world if you aren't going to use it".
