Athlete are in athletics. The only true athletes are in Track and Field.

MMA is a joke to athletics.

You know who get the title of "World's greatest athlete" ? The person that wins the decathlon.

If anderson silva can win the decathlon then you can crown his ass.

The odds of him winning would be +100000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000

We can play that definition game all day.

"Traditionally, the title of "World's Greatest Athlete" has been given to the man who wins the decathlon"

I can find different definitions for athlete all over the net, so what?

Rolling around on a mat and doing couple kicks and punches once in a while does not make you one of the best athletes in the world. There is no measurement in any of it, nothing to compare to.

I can tell you off the bat, he's not the fastest, not the strongest, not the quickest, not anything in the world.

k13, your opinion is respected... but in regards to the definition of "athlete", I started the thread and this is what my definition was based on, so hopefully that will be taken into account with opinions.

Mixed Martial Arts is not "simply guys rolling around on a mat and doing kicks and punches once in a while". The training involved in this for someone of Silvas stature is comparable to any world class athletes sport, including a decathalon athlete, but through different techniques and exercises.

Silva has extremely rare gifts in his athleticism that have allowed him to dominate in mixed martial arts similar to how manny pacquiao dominates in boxing or jordan and Chris Mullin dominated in basketball

As for decatholon athletes... these guys deserve respect, but I know very little about the sport(s)... Is there one decathalon athlete that dominates the rest consistently? If not, then what is it that makes them so deserving... is it simply because they too have a combination of physical attributes and skills that allows them to be good in their sport? What is it that makes them the best? Provide a foundation for your argument.

This is rediculus athletes are in all sports the decathalon is a good event to test the best all around athletic ability of an individual but it is certenly not the only test of ones athletic ability. It is nowere near as competitive in the united states as many other sports as there is no pro track. As this is the case a vast magority of the athleats in this and many other countries who would dominate the decathalon never even compete because thay are buisy makin millions in football basketball hockey mma and otherwise. And you stil have not prodused a name of a dominant competitor in the decathalon who shows his best all time qualifications by being head and sholders above the rest in his sport. dont get me wrong i apresheate the sport and my nominee for best all time won both the decathalon and pentathalon in his first run at the olimpics while also being a elite football and baseball player. And what would the odds be of the decathlon winner becoming the UFC Middleweight Champion of the World? Ur argument makes no sense!

Bryan Clay is the best athlete in the world. Reigning decathlon champion.

Also, he completed the Sparq training for his rating in football. Basically, it uses results from a few athletic tests to analyze how good an athlete would be in a specific sport. How he compared to some NFL guys-
                      Reggie Bush- 93.38
                      Tim Tebow- 96.92
                      Jonathan Stewart- 97.54
                      Bryan Clay- 130.40

Clay is a freak. Best athlete in the world

silva isnt the best. the sport is too young to have the current greatest already be known as the "best", and for that best to transcend all sports is too much.

[QUOTE]Walker married his college sweetheart, Cindy DeAngelis Grossman in 1983. After 18 years they divorced in 2001.[19] They have one son together, Christian. Walker is a born-again Christian. He made a guest appearance on The Hour of Power, hosted by televangelist Robert Schuller. He has a fifth-degree black belt in tae kwon do and nearly made the Olympic team in the sprint relay. He competed in the 1992 Winter Olympics in two-man bobsled, finishing seventh.[20]
In 1988, while still a player for the Dallas Cowboys, he danced with the Fort Worth Ballet for a single performance.[21] He ran the 100 meters in 10.22 seconds and the 100 yards in 9.3 seconds. He won back-to-back American Superstars competitions in 1987 and 1988. Walker stated in an in-studio interview during BaD Radio on August 23, 2010 that he still performs 3,500 sit-ups and 1,000 push ups every day. He has been going through this same routine since high school. Walker has said that he only eats once a day. [22]
In his 2008 autobiography Breaking Free, Walker revealed that he suffers from dissociative identity disorder, formerly known as "multiple personality disorder".[23] He claimed that due to his disorder, he cannot remember the season he won the Heisman Trophy, let alone the moment. He also claimed that during one episode, he had held a gun to his own head. He stated he did not ever remember doing this. He is getting help for this condition and feels he has recovered by gaining back control.[24]
