yeah, I moved in w/ my wife into an apartment in Wilkes Barre 9 years ago. She is a CT transplant and the company told her Wilkes Barre is nice. It was the worst 7 years of my life living there. I couldn't stand it. We finally bought a house 2 years ago in a nicer location about 8 miles away.

Wilkes Barre can be a rough place. Hazleton was very quiet up until about 10 years ago. Very little crime. Now, a murder a week. lol.

Yeah, I read about it all the time in the timesleader. a lot of hispanic crime. I grew up around Pittston/Jenkins Township. I live somewhat around there now.

LA or SD? Those two places sound great for weather, fresh veggies and fruit. Who would want to have unmerciful heat and cold, cold winters? I've had it with both in Southern Indiana.

If possible from a work perspective live in Northeast 8 or 9 months and go to Florida for 3 or 4 months. I am planning to do that starting next year. I am selling my house in Bucks County PA, buying a place in NE PA and buying a place in Jacksonville FL.

Athens, Georgia was a fun weekend for me a few years ago. I looked at real estate/rent prices and they were pretty cheap, cheapest I've seen for a college town.

You heard wrong. North Carolina sucks. No one should move here. The weather is terrible. There is no spring or fall. Our only two seasons are cold/wet and hot/humid. We're all dumb rednecks. We hate black people and Mexicans. Our women are fat and ugly and don't shave their pits. All our food is fried and greasy. There are no jobs and the entire state smells like hog manure. There's no reason to move here. Ever. If you must move south, move to Florida. Or Georgia. All those magazines that rated Raleigh the best place to live were bribed by our commerce department. SF is just too expensive and who wants to cross the bridge to live in Oakland ? Always 50-70 degrees would be OK, but I'd prefer SD weather.

To me, although I have never lived there, LA seems to have much more to offer than SD. [being retired!]
They have those mountains and National Parks in close vicinity. SD has the Zoo.
LA has multiple sports options, too.
Also, isn't SD too close to the Mex. border? { drugs and illegals]

SD and LA are only 100 miles apart. SD is like an hour from the border, if that. SD is a big city with plenty to do, LA is of course bigger. You can also easily get to LA from SD. Traffic and smog are worse in LA, and gangs. SD is better, IMO.

There will be tons of illegal aliens anywhere in the Southwest, no real difference between SD, LA, LV, Phoenix, Texas cities, etc.
