Kickers go out before the game and practice. The coach knows what his max distance is for that day before the game starts. It's January, wind chill is low teens to single digits, the football is hard as a brick, the field is basically painted mud, the wind may be a factor, as well. To criticize Smith for not going for the FG shows a lack of understanding of all that goes into the decision...

WRONG...
Just like when the right move is to fold a hand and then the next card would have completed your inside str8, folding was still the right play.
Punting, because presumably because it was outside of the area where the kick was +EV, was still the right play... the fact that the punt sucked doesn't make the decision wrong...
