Couple of buddies and I thinking hard about playing this year. Any suggestions on where to stay, when to go, how many days should I plan for, etc...
Anybody ever play in the WSOP main event?

#2I've never played a WSOP tournament, but for the last few years I've been playing cash games almost daily in Vegas throughout the series. As for your questions, it depends what you're looking for (bankroll, what games you want to play, why you're playing, etc.). I highly recommend you make the trip, the WSOP is like a poker convention/party all over Las Vegas. Even the locals casinos get great poker action during the series, but I recommend that you look at places other than the Rio to play. The Venetian, Binions, Orleans, Golden Nugget, Aria, Bellagio, and Caesar's Palace all run tournament series concurrent with a portion of the WSOP. With the exception of the Caesar's tournaments all of them are widely recognized as being run in a superior manner than the World Series.
For cash games, the Rio will have the highest rake in town. If you play in the year-round room they'll also take a jackpot drop which they will use to fund promotions for locals after the series is over, so that's essentially an extra buck in rake every hand. If you play in one of the ballrooms get ready for incompetent temp-dealers trying to hand-shuffle, a combination of incompetent and shady temp-floorpeople, lackluster game security, and (if you play on graveyard shift) air conditioning 45-55 degrees colder than the outside temperature when you walked in. Some people justify playing cash games at the Rio because the games are soft, but if you try out some different casinos you'll find that during the WSOP the games are soft everywhere.
Again, I recommend you make the trip. WSOP season is like Christmas for poker players.Comment -

#3I go every June. Instead of 10k for the main. Play some 200-2000 events.
Last year there was a daily $200 deep stack 15k in chips at the Rio.
There are a ton of other series as well at golden nugget, binion's, wynn, bellagio, the V, and Caesars.
I play non holdem games there, and it's great.
I'm going to Vegas tomorrow, love it.Comment -

#4One reason to play cash at the Rio, is they spread diferent games. 5 card PLO ran all series, as well as limit omaha8 and stud8 , etc..
The 5/10/20 PLO game had some 10k potsComment -

#5You can stay anywhere for $200-$300 a week. June is cheap, but is also 115 degrees and cools to 95 at nite.Comment -

#10If money is no problem stay at the Bellagio for a couple of weeks and have a good time. If money is a issue there are much better ways to spread your money around during the wsop. Cash games are great during the series and you can still play a circut event for 1000$.Comment -

#13I have played in the main event. I would try to satellite into it if I were you. There are plenty of satellite tourneys at the Rio throughout the WSOP.Comment
