No one keeps cars very long anymore. When a car gives you too much trouble get rid of it. Trace, beware of karma in the future.

Your exactly right seaborn. I'm more scared of karma than Bubba.

I had to see if you would do it. But it doesn't have to be linked to your home address. Chances are your girlfriend doesn't live that far and unless your state has Audi dealers like Starbucks then it would be easy to find. And then find the Russian returning a car.

I guess worth a try. I started to tell you a fake one. But was busy at the time. Even if I told you the real one it wouldn't matter.

I know this is a game to most reading this, and what poker has taught me is this very well may look like pocket aces to you, and far to often pocket aces either win a little pot or lose a big one.
See if you can transpose this analogy.
Good tip too, look up those two words you just read that you don't know, and you'll never forget them.

I know someone that did that years ago.

I say if you drive a lot just buy rather then look for ways to scam people.

People could just start a small business and write some things off.

I'm not trying to make a living of this james. I really had little to do with this. I started this thread because I thought this was a common thing. Apparently it is only common in the criminal or underground world. I have a rap sheet ten feet long. But I been good for a number of years. This is baby shit. You guys need to calm down. You know how many pedophiles are members here? How many use the same computer to look at kiddie porn? But you wanna try to bust my balls? Pretty silly really. But whatever. I don't really give a fukk. No really so much you James. You seem like a kool dude under different circumstances.

At least a few people a year ask me to roll back their mileage at my shop. I am capable of doing it, but it's so -EV I never even consider it. I have even heard of stings set up to catch both the people that want the rolling, and the people who actually do it.

In reality, it's difficult to prosecute because it's hard to prove. The car itself doesn't tell a strong enough story to be able to rat you out. Even if the mileage shown on the odometer is different than the mileage stored in the vehicles other modules, that is still not enough evidence to prosecute you. You have to worry more about the documented mileage that exists on your vehicle than you do the vehicle itself giving people clues that the odometer has been tampered with.

In the end, as long as your mileage is not lower than what already has been officially documented (by dealer, DMV, or insurance company), the chances of getting caught are slim to none.

*** If you have OnStar or any other factory two-way communication system, yoi have to consider that as constantly documented milage, so the risk of getting caught is much greater than a vehicle without that kind of system.

I understand your point but some people really get screwed with this. And you asked the question but unless your lying its not your car and really not you doing it so its not totally against you.

I had a small used car dealership. Really small. I ran it along with my detail shop. Only had the car dealership the last 1.5 years of the detail shop or so. I had a guy looking at one of my cars that bought a car (I don't think they had big money) that seemed like a decent used car years before I met him. He said they met someone that knew the car and they started looking into it. I think they thought the car had 100000 Kms + but with what they found it had over 220000 with what they could find out. It could have had more. That had it for a while and ended up selling it to get something else. They sold it cheap because they told the guy buying it that they had no idea how much it had on it.

In the end they said they talked to the guy again and the car has ran without a problem. At that point it had over 300000 kms that they knew about it so they all got lucky with that one.

And yes there are worse crimes out there but a crime is a crime. You can't have a dealer say that they think you "rolled back" the odometer and then say well hey at least I didn't kill anyone.

Also this is one of those things that are not worth getting caught for. One guy (he was the one doing them) go 100 months and 3 years probation and ordered to pay back $4.1 million. And its one thing selling it to someone but giving back to the dealer isn't good. They get screwed if they sell it so they will do what they can to find out who really did it.

I know a dealer that bought a car at an auction and I think sold it. One day he has people coming to his dealership looking for all papers he had on that car because they said it was tapered with. He was lucky because he had enough info to prove it was done before him. From what I hear there was enough info to trace it back to who did it.

As far as it being common. I have read one article (I forget what year) and it said 4.3% were tampered with. Another one in 2009 said about 10% is what they estimate. So it is done but I don't call 4.3%-10% "common". That being said that number is still a high number.

You also have to remember that people can be searching the internet and find this thread. Its good to have different views in here so if someone is thinking of doing this they can see what they really are getting into.

For me, IMO its just something that will not save you enough money to make it worth any fine or charges. One guy got 9 years. He might have been a dealer but thats a lot of time.
