I'm not sure how the "law of averages" has anything to do with them losing. That would mean you know what their average wins and losses are suppose to be. You can say law of averages when flipping a coin because you know it is a 50%, but it makes no sense when talking about a team. San Diego St. -5 lets get this.

i've been around long enough to know that teams like san diego st don't get through the entire college basketball season undefeated.
that's all i meant by the law of averages, that they are bound to get a few losses and if for example they are shooting a better % than they should and giving up a lower % than they should, that might revert back to the mean. then again, trends can often stay irrational longer than bettors can stay solvent.
