Netflix for dummies; question 1 wtf is it?
I see the stock went from $9 to $180 so I'm thinking they must be at least kind of cool. How does it work??? How does it rate on the coolness meter???

I wouldn't buy their stock. I think they have hit their peak. I see redbox taking over, too long of a turnaround with netflix.

Netflix is what put Blockbuster out of business. Wish I had invented it.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

Netflix is the sole reason that Blockbuster is almost dead in the water.

Had an account in the past .. the movie rental was great - when they added streaming it got even better ...
as soon as the streaming goes HD i'll probably be back ...

They have basically every movie. You request a movie and they send it out in the mail. Depending on which offer you sign up you can have up to 3 movies coming and going. (so pretty much you could almost watch a movie a day if you wanted). You send and receieve the movies via the mail.

Also they have netflix instant watch, where you can instantly watch some movies (not all). If you have an xbox or wii you can watch the instant watch selection on your tv.

                    My Experience:

-They rule the market in terms of Logistics (If I drop the movie off at 9am at the post office it somehow arrives at their facility a day later) and Technology (kick ass website). Their competitors (if you want to call them that) are Redbox and Blockbuster----

For 8.99 (lowest package). I can stream about 30,000 titles to my IPOD, XBOX, WII, PS3, computer unlimited.

In the interim I can rent (1) movie at a time. It comes in the mail, I can keep it as long as I want. If I return it (postage paid by Netflix) I can go on to rent another. All of this is very nicely streamed through their website which is extremely "smart", that is, it collects data on you and then can make a pretty accurate determination as to what other films you would like based on your prior viewing/ratings.

Higher monthly packages allow you to have more movies out at the same time. Hope this helps.

The turnaround for Netflix is two days plus you don't have to spend time going out to get the movie, driving back to return it. Also, if you rented 15 movies a month from RedBox, it's the same price as Netflix.

Also, RedBox has a 1 month for the newest movies. Netflix has the first distribution rights with the major studios.

You sure about that? Blockbuster is aways saying they have this or that movie 28 days before RedBox and Netflix.

How come cable/satellite providers aren't trying to compete? They could come up with a monthly pass thing and destroy everyone. Instead they charge 5 bucks a movie I think.

This is a good question. I have seen in their marketing "We have this movie a month before Netflix" etc. etc. so I guess they feel like this covers them vs Netflix and therefore they can keep gouging people

dam im surprised netflix is worth 180 a share. They need to do some reinvesting, im running out of stuff to watch on instant watch.

i had netflix but now with blockbuster (yeah they got mail service too).

netflix is good but blockbuster has some advantages. they get new releases 28 days sooner and also rent ps3/xbox/wii games.

the negative is that turnaround takes 6 days since nearest blockbuster distribution center is farther away. netflix takes half the time as theres one in town. but blockbuster allows you to exchange dvds at the nearest store which you cant do with netflix since they got none.

Streaming Netflix to the ps3 is the way to go. Good, not great selection of movies to watch instantly, but you can't beat there collection of tv shows.
