A poem (doggerel actually) that I heard years ago, and for some reason remembered. (Easy for me to recall things rhythmetic - hard to be that. Just too "white" I guess)
THAT EASTER MORN, THAT EASTER MORN,
THE PRIEST CAME IN ALL SHAVED AND SHORN -
HE CRIED ALOUD IN VOICE FORLORN
THIS DAY A CHRISTIAN GOD WAS BORN!!
AND DEEPLY QUIVERED IN HIS GIRTH
AS SPOKE HE OF THE VIRGIN BIRTH.
FOR MARY'S BELLY TOOK THE SEED
WITHOUT THE USUAL DIRTY DEED -
HER FORNICATION WITH A GHOST
PRODUCED A GOD, LORD GOD OF HOSTS!!
ON EASTER MORN REMEMBER THIS
WHEN FIRST YOU RISE TO TAKE A ----!
I imagine that many people would deem this in execrable taste, and deeply offensive. Not only Christians but others who were so as children, and who have family who subscribe to that religion.
I wonder if the same sense of outrage is what motivated the Muslims in Europe when they reacted so strongly to a Danish newspaper's cartoon depiction of Mohammed. Which those who adhere to Islam likewise deemed sacriligious.
Are definitions and determinations of what is proper and what is scandalous something that is strictly culturally conditioned?
