    tax question
this is a legit question, so please keep the sarcasm to a minimum. can you file for joint return on tax return if your wife or kid has no SSN? or you're forced to file as single? one of my friend asked me because his turbotax software got stuck....i have no clue what to tell him. i just told him to go to H&R block.

Yes, you can. I'm not sure how to do so with turbo-tax, but I don't believe unemployed married non-citizen residents (how's that for a mouthful!) are required to have an SSN. Ergo, the bread winner can get the tax write-offs for his spouse, even without an SSN. I'd still have her apply for one though.

thanks. she is canadian and just moved to the states because her husband got a job offer. this is their first time filing US tax, so i guess it is going to be pretty complicated. i think they also has to file canadian tax as well...i am just glad i don't have to deal with two federal tax forms i got my SSN when i was borned, so i have no idea what it takes to get a SSN. someone told me you need to have a job to get SSN?

There may be some sort of number on the working **** or something like that....Do not tell them to go to h and r block, it is way over priced...have them find a small local operation that will do the same thing for half the price.

h and r block is esp bad for doing business taxes, my exp with them has been terrible, they cannot do any kind of complicated tax return, only take easy personal returns to them
