What the Hell is a "Mid-Major?"

I know who the college hoops "majors" are - mostly the same confs that are BCS in football.

But, what, exactly is s "mid-major?"

I have heard teams in the Colonial so described, also MIssouri Valley, Horizon, and a few others.

But how is a mid major defined? Is a MEAC team a mid-major?
A team from Southern? if not, are they "minors?"

Or going up a notch, is WAC a major or a mid major? Sun Belt? Mtn West?

It's simply a school not linked up with a major conference that is placed in a championship series.
