#38What he is trying to tell you is like you can get a puppy for cheap but if it's a bad dog it may cost you 100X times more through his lifespan than paying extra for the puppy if it's from a well known breeder who knows what he is doing. So the free puppy may cost you $10,000 in 10 years but the $500 certified breed puppy could only cost you $5,000 for 10 years. (this is just an example).Comment -

#39vet bills can be brutal. lucky for me pits are strong dogs and require very few vet visits. i give them their 6 in 1 shots so it is just a matter of getting their rabies shots.Comment -

#40also if you want a healthy dog dont feed in the crap you buy at the food store. Most of it is filler and useless for the dog. Think about it. Processed foods did not come about until the 1900's and dogs were doing just fine without them. Now all kids of problems/disease occur and they only thing that has changed this century is the dogs diet. Look up the BARF diet, your dog will thank you.Comment -

Absolutely. Whatever food you buy, make sure the first ingredient is not CORN or XXX by-products. Go to your local feed store there will be lots of smaller brands that have quality ingredients.
As LordVodka said, 90% of pure breeds WILL have health problems of some kind whether it's hips, eyes, skin allergies.
Go to your local humane society and get one of the medium large mixed breed retriever looking dogs. It's probably multi-breed and such will have hybrid vigor and live forever without health problems.
If you really want a pure breed, I'd second asianfootballs Akita recommendation. Great family dogs but are one of the strongest dogs and very protective. I haven't owned one but my friend has had many great ones over the years.
I've got a couple wonderful yellow labs but if you want a dog to protect your home not the best dogs most yellows are too friendly for this.
Something else to keep in mind, most large dogs need plenty of exercise/play. If you don't have time to spend with the dog a large dog will get it's kicks SOMEHOW and if it's not walking or playing fetch it will be devouring your couch or shoes.Comment -

#42Being around dogs all my life it depends on you.... I prefer a "teddy bear puppy" part bichon part shih tzu dog... why???
They are hypoallergenic, they don't shed, a walk around the block is all the exercise they need, doesn't eat you out of house and home, Cuddles!! loves to sit on your lap, good around kids/toddlers, smaller breed... so wont destroy stuff, can potty train them indoors on a pad (won't have to pick up shit all the time outside)
cons: doesn't get a beer out of a fridge for you and isn't very good at fetch... so if your looking for a dog to do tricks.. this breed isn't for you...
I've had 11 different breeds of dogs with in my family and "teddy bear" is the way to go...
keep in mind it cost more to "fix" a girl then a boy... how ever girls are normally less agressive in terms of how hyperactive they are...Comment -

#58I think a doberman or rottweiler would suit your needs; strong, smart dogs that were bred to do guard work. Dachshunds would work if you just want the dog to bark if someone's messing with your stuff.
Also bulldogs are ridiculously expensive.Comment -

#62I've had a few Beagles, a border collie, a lhasa apso, and a mutt or two..all pretty cool dogs. None though, could ever compare to my Rotti that passed away a few months back. By far the best dog I ever had, great with the kids and as loyal as could be..Comment -

#63when it comes down to it as someone else mentioned its all your personal preference, but from what you've described I'd either say what others have said, a pit bull (staffordshire terrier) or what I currently have is a Boxer. Both are great dogs, that are energetic, loving, playful, smart, filled with personality and can help protect a family.

#64I also own a pitbull and I only have good things to say about it. It's a very loyal, playful and genuinely happy dog. If you raise it properly you and your family are gaining a friend for life. I can also recommend a Giant Schnauzer, my previously owned dog. It was way smarter than my pitbull and also a great companion.Comment -

#66Try your local shelter, It would feel good to save a life or two. Never know what you might find. This is the wives dogs. The dynamic duo. The Olde English Bulldog had a cleft pallet, took surgery to close and no issue since.

few friends of mine mentioned the local animal shelter. looked it up and they do checkups + shots before adoption

#70German Shepard
I also would'nt get a purebreed dog over rated and over priced
I used to have a German Shepard and it was by far the smartest dog I've ever seen
You want to find out what a species of dog was breed for because almost all dogs were breed for a job and to do certain a type of work thats why those little dogs are dumb as hell because they were'nt breed for working.Comment
