The Las Vegas Gladiators finished last year at a dismal 2-14, and were relocated to Cleveland. During the offseason, there was high turnover. Cleveland focused on getting a lot of veterans. This rebuilt team has quietly picked up 2 wins. While they are still "under the radar", they have had the 2d most effective offense in the AFL, averaging 9 yards per offensive play. Philyaw, a seasoned QB, has had a QB rating of 129 (also #2 in the AFL).
The Gladiators opened as a small dog against the Columbus Destroyers, last year's runner-up in the Arena Bowl. This is NOT the same team as last year. At 0-2, they have struggled on offense. I can venture only two guesses as to this opener: memory of this team from lat year, and strength of schedules for the teams this year (Columbus's opponents are better). SOS in AFL matters much less than in other sports.
My play for the week is Cleveland Gladiators +1.
