The Phillies have entered the Cliff Lee race
    Per ESPN.

The Phillies are pretty close to signing Cliff Lee.

If they manage to get Lee.

They would have Halladay, Lee, and Cole Hamels.

    Not a bad lineup.

Here is the story straight from ESPN.

Baseball sources said the Phillies, who had been lurking on the periphery, jumped into the process with fervor after the winter meetings in Florida last week.

The Phillies previously acquired Lee from Cleveland at the July 2009 non-waiver deadline, and Lee posted a 7-4 record with a 3.39 ERA during the regular season before helping lead Philadelphia to a World Series appearance against the Yankees. Lee went 2-0 with a 2.81 ERA against New York, but the Phillies fell to the Yankees in six games.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. traded Lee to Seattle last December in conjunction with the team's acquisition of Roy Halladay from Toronto, but sources said Lee developed a fondness for his teammates and the city of Philadelphia and would be interested in returning if the Phillies can come up with a package that's competitive with the Yankees and Rangers. If the Phillies were able to pull off a Lee signing, he would join Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels in a dream rotation for Philadelphia.

Cliff Lee spurned bigger offers from the Yankees and Rangers and agreed to a five-year, guaranteed $120 million contract with the Phillies late Monday, sources said.

He's trying to drive the price up even more. sometime tomorrow it will leak that he is going to yanks or rangers. Trying to get the other one to drive the price up a drop more at the last minute.

they are in the bidding but it is being reported he would have to take less money. That generally does not happen. Sounds like his Agent is doing his job to bring in all parties and try and generate a bidding war. My guess is 7 years 180 mil from the Yankees will finally get it done.

Rangers can have him for that price. At lee's age he only has two maybe three tops prime yrs left. its bad enough Arod will be making a bazillion dollars a year well into his 40's. Lee at 38-39 making 30 mill a yr for something like 12-14 with a 6.00 ERA. Rangers can have him.

Espn just reported yanks out of running for Lee. He probably never had any intention of going there. Used yanks to drive price up. Fukkem. Rangers can have him.

The Giants didn't have any offense and they won it all. They had guys like Cody Ross and Pat Burrelll hitting for them.

The Phillies may not have hit much last year---but come on----Rollins, Utley, Howard, Polanco, Ruiz---those are all All-Stars, and 2 of them are MVPs.

If Rollins and Utley can return back to form (and Howards does not choke in playoffs) they might be pretty good offensively although I don't see how they replace Werth. They were a rocking offensive team a couple years ago.

Let the haters come out already....Phils have just locked up the NLCS & World Series.
Talk about the Bullpen, they're all now spectators watching the fun. Madson is an awesome set up man & Lidge regained his old form. What BP do you need when your 4 starters can go the distance EVERY game.

Good pitching beats good hitting every time, and with Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino, Chooch, the up & coming Dom Brown, this team will look like the Braves dynasty of the early 90s.

What a smack in the face for the Yankees ...Cliff signs for 35 Million less to be with a REAL CHAMPION!

The Phillies are pretty close to signing Cliff Lee.

If they manage to get Lee.

They would have Halladay, Lee, and Cole Hamels.
