But it's what comes after "Tampa Bay" that has some fans annoyed. Some have questioned naming the team for a marine animal not widely known in these waters. Others disliked the devil reference and predicted God would doom the team because of it.

After eight years of losing, one must wonder if they were right.

"There are some that don't have a positive reaction to the word devil," Silverman said. "There are some who don't have a positive reaction to a devil ray. What is a devil ray? If we make a change, it will be something that will be more accessible and appeal to everyone . . . or at least not drive people away."

WTF? One is degrading to a group of people historically raped by the US and the other is the common name of an animal. If anything it's like changing the name of the Washington Bullets, but more absurd.

Last I checked, the American Indian Movement wasn't involved in getting Devil dropped from the name.

you are correct ..it was people who didn't like the word devil in the name....some actually thinking God would doom the team because of it...they should change it to the Tampa Bay Bible Lovers...then maybe God would bless them with a winning season...

Though I'm sure they dropped it because some very smart consulting company did a thorough analysis on the desirability of the two names. These are big companies with big bottom lines, they don't just do something like this on a whim.
