    Gambling Legal/Illegal?
Random question. How is it okay to gamble with these offshore books? Using an example like bookmaker, 5dimes, bodog whatever. I was trying to explain this to a friend, but didnt know how I could explain correctly. Thanks for the help guys.

The act of Bookmaking is illegal there is no law on the books that I know of that restricts US citizens from gambling offshore. Now if you gamble offshore and dont report taxes the government can get you for that .Now if they prove you were knowingly hiding the funds to avoid taxes they could charge you with structuring which is a smaller version of money laundering. Penalty for this is up to 5years in prison and a 50% of all income that has not been reported to the IRS.

Always was under the assumption that it was OK to place bets off shore via the internet. Placing bets on the phone is highly illegal.

                    might be nothing

yes, thus the word offshore. Technically they are placing the bets in the country of origin where the book is located and licensed to operate, like Costa Rica etc and not in the US. That's how I see it.

No US citizen has ever been charged with gambling at an offshore sportsbook as far as I know.

Judge: "Yeah... Gosh, you know, your concepts are really interesting, Mister Jung. Unfortunately for you, the line you crossed was real and the plants you brought with you were illegal, so your bail is twenty thousand dollars"

Thanks for the responses so far. I was kind of thinking what dwight had said, thus the reason for books being offshore.

Very informative site. Gives you some answers, but a lot to read. From what I gather I agree with RudyR... it's the state in which you live that will ultimately have the last word.
