Not thats its a huge bowl or anything, but damn, I cant believe they did it before the bowl game. Must be something interesting stirring up there.

Well Pitt not making the BCS game this year was a HUGE disappointment. Pitt has been more talented than every other team in the Big East every year for a long time and he hasn't been able to put it together.

I am surprised he has lasted this long.

I hate Wanny when he was with the Bears. Liked him better at Pitt, where he seemed to fit in. But he never was a good sideline coach. Now that's he's fired, I can just not care about him at all. He was god awful with the Bears.

Once upon a time, Wanny was touted as a genious HC in the making. He proved everyone wrong. Sucked in the pro's and in college. I wonder who takes a shot at him next? I'd snap him up as a DC, but that's about it.

He'll be a DC in the NFL within a year I think. Maybe Washington or Houston because then he can become an interim head coach some day again.

No. This guys is one of those coaches that gets hired over and over again. And he is a hex on a program. I am sure he is a nice guy personally. But he hasnt done jack in his career and keeps getting hired. Norv Turner is the same!! Some guys just keep getting hired no matter how bad they are. It must be an interview thing. They must really give great interviews. Norv Truner will be fired this year. That is a guarantee btw.

I agree with Eagles36...he will be back in the NFL in the next couple of years as an assistant.

                          He's proven he's not a head coach.

surprised at that, though he was slowly building a solid program - to slow i guess.

He reminds me of Wade Phillips or Norv Turner. I do think he will be an assistant coach for some team. He sure was terrible for Miami and Chicago. This is no shock to me but right before a bowl game does not make sense.

I honestly didn't think he was doing a bad job either. He had an awesome season last year but they had ALL the chances in the world to make a BCS game this year and can't really defend him there. Surprising though considering this is his alma mater. Thought he might have a longer leash.

He cost me a future with that piss poor effort against WVA a few weeks ago. He needed to go. Pitt could do great things in the big east with a good coach.

if you're gonna make a coaching change, gotta do it now.

this is a big time for recruiting and a school certainly doesn't want a lame duck coach out on the recruiting trail.

Wannstedt was expected to come in and take the program to the next level post-Walt Harris. He seemed to get quality recruits in his pipeline but never landed the huge recruits i.e. Terrelle Pryor. His coaching was pisspore and didn't have the fire IMO to lead a team past a so-so season. They should have won the Big East last year. Last game of the year they are beating the crap out of the Cincy Bearcats and blow the lead and end up losing. Would have gotten crushed by Florida in the BCS game but there were certain games he was expected to win but couldn't.

Oh well as a Panther fan I hope they bring in the right guy. I'd like to see Mike Leach end up with the job.

I am a Pitt Alum and a huge fan! Both Walt Harris (Pitt ran out of town) and Wanny (recently run out of town) were good coaches for the program. Pitt is not a top football program in College. They are a mid-level football team that should hope to win the Big-East every once in a while and go to a decent Bowl game. They should strive for 8-4 or 9-3 type seasons and be happy!

Pitt needs to pay for a good head coach and they wont! They are 58th in the nation in terms of money they paid Wanny. They have the 58th best team in the country. What is the big mystery here?? You get what you pay for!

I've lost several winnable bets because of his bone head decision making. Good firing. And yes I agree he will land back in the NFL as an assistant somewhere. Its a roll he is best suited for.

I would have thought that Rutgers would be looking for a new coach before Pitt. I understand that colleges have to get on with recruiting as early as possible. However, right before a bowl game and to do it to former alumni is kind of classless to me.
