I recently started betting online (week 5 of the NFL) and play mostly NFL games and a handful NBA and NCAA FB. I usually only play parleys, typically 3-5 team and have been doing well so far. When do most of you place your NFL bets, early in the week Tue-Thur, mid week Fri-Sat or wait until just before game time? When do you see the best value in the spreads? I'm curious to hear about timing of bets in betting strategy.

#2Within 12 hours of event basically every play, a lot of the time hour or less before.
You can get "value" betting early in mid-week, but pretty impossible to predict where line will move, and you can get beat considerably on closing line often.
Betting night before, say a morning game, you anticipate to move or betting within an hour before and chasing steam both yield good value, imo. Also, books like Pinny/BM will usually move before 5Dimes, so like trying to beat line there.Comment -

#6It will depend on the certain game. If you like the DOG and think the line will only go up no reason in placing the bet on a Monday. Same goes for the FAV if you think the line will go up the sooner yo place the bet the better. It doesnt always happen like this though. Sometimes the games you think might go a certain way go anoher and you missed out on an opportunity. I would say get half of yu stake in on a monday. So if yu bet $50 a game, throw $25 on the spread you like. That way, if it does happen to change in your favor no wories just play that line. This is just me so everyone here will have their own opinion. Best of Luck to you and welcome to SBR!Comment -

#8Not knowing how a team will perform . . . and with so many upsets . . . and with a lot of parity in most sports now . . . I bet during the game!

#9I shop early and look for good value. However, a game like CHI/DET opening at DET +3.....sometimes I get burned.

#10I shop early, too, and also bet NBA opening lines when I see value. Usually I am on the right side of movement, but not always. But for big public faves that I like anyway, I bet as early as possible. The Colts this Thursday is a good example. I grabbed it at -2.5 as soon as it came out since I would've bet it up to -5.5 anyway.
The general advice has been mentioned. Bet faves early and dogs late, cuz your odds will likely improve (at least sometimes) if you do that.Comment -

#12Usually right before kickoff. However some sports like soccer and tennis go off at odd hours so generally 12-24 hours before..Comment -

#13You have to place them as soon as you get the best number. It also gives you a chance for a future middle if you get a good number.Originally posted by Roadtrip635I recently started betting online (week 5 of the NFL) and play mostly NFL games and a handful NBA and NCAA FB. #20If not on gameday, I will place my bets, the night before.
I figure if I wait until game day, the spread is likely to go up and I may not want to bet it otherwise. Another strategy I use is not betting any more games than I originally placed. Chasing is never profitable, even with a winning day.Comment -

#22If you're betting the closing line everytime you're betting a line that over time and over a large number of bets will hit at .500 and you're paying -105 (or worse, -110) for each one. Opening and mid-week lines aren't nearly as tight as the final closing line.Originally posted by BettingGeekCould you elaborate?
This is most true in the NFL, that's why the books always kill it in that sport.Comment -
