I have spoken to Carol and she has confided that JJ is her high school sweetheart but he has grown despondent over the years primarily due to excessive gambling and drugging. Although the abuse has never risen to a physical level, JJ does criticize her often in order to elevate his own self-esteem. She has given me the following examples:

JJ took Carol to a fine dining restaurant a few years ago. JJ ordered the filet, the waiter cautioned he may be worried about the mad cow. To which JJ responded, "Nah, she can order for herself."

They went to Carol's high school reunion and JJ saw a man getting blitzed. Carol informed her it was her ex-boyfriend and had not been sober since they split. JJ wondered aloud how a man could celebrate that long.
