Katie Boucher headed to her local pizza place, Amano’s Pizza in Bristol, Connecticut, to pick up an order of pizzas. Expecting to get a $30 bill, she handed over her debit card. Rather than getting billed the $30 she owed, she found herself the victim of a card thief who turned that $30 bill into $2600 worth of charges. That’s not even the most shocking part of the story, sadly.
Because it was a debit card, and not just a credit card, not only was Boucher’s money all spent, she also was charged some $233 in overdraft fees because the helpful cashier at Amano’s completely drained her checking account. However, when Boucher went to get her money back, the owner of Amano’s threw the complaining customer out of his store for having the gall to actually want her hard-earned cash back.
“I don’t like people coming in here and telling me what to do,” said Amano’s Pizza owner Von Manolitsis. “This is my business.”
Call me crazy, but when someone steals $2600 from my pocket, I deserve to get that back in MONEY, not in store credit. That’s right, Manolitsis tried to refund Boucher’s stolen money by giving her an equivalent amount of free pizzas. She can’t pay her light bill with free pizzas!
