He should come back home, we'll be glad to take him off their hands for 8 mil a year.

He needs to just bow out gracefully. He is lucky to be even getting anything over 5 mil a year. This guy is unreal.

The latest report is that he is seeking $150M over 6 years. After Yankees ownership has solidified their stance and approached the offer they put on the table as take it or leave it, it may not seem out of the ordinary that unless the two sides meet halfway, other teams will be quick to gather in line to make the future HOFer a bonafied offer.
Report: Jeter wants six years, $150M
Late last season, Major League Baseball and the players association reached an agreement to stop discussing contract negotiations through the media. And just weeks ago, the Yankees and Casey Close, the agent for free-agent shortstop Derek Jeter, agreed not to disclose their negotiating positions.
And yet here we are, not surprisingly, with everybody's laundry hanging out on the public clothesline. The Yankees, we learned earlier in the week, have offered Jeter three years at $45 million. And now, Bill Madden of the New York Daily Newsreports that it's thought Jeter's starting point is six years at $150 million -- and that he's unwilling to budge from the annual value of $25 million.
The Yankees have taken a hard line, saying this is a baseball contract, not a golden parachute, and Jeter is a 36-year-old infielder coming off his worst season. Add the $45 million, which is significantly over market in a strict baseball sense, to the $200 million the Yankees have already paid Jeter, and he'll have earned more money than anyone in baseball history not named Alex Rodriguez.
Close, however, is seeking a lifetime achievement award that recognizes Jeter's iconic status and the hidden value of having Captain Clutch in pinstripes. In what I'm sure just is a coincidence, the average annual value of the seven remaining years of Alex Rodriguez's contract is $24.9 million, but as Madden points out, the circumstances of A-Rod's contract were much different than Jeter's situation. Rodriguez was coming off a monster year as the Yankees' cleanup hitter, was 32 and appeared certain to be on his way to becoming the all-time home run leader (and word of his steroid use had not yet come out).
There's simply no way the Yankees, even with their financial means, can pay Jeter $25 million a year -- especially considering that since they pay a 40-percent luxury tax, it would cost them considerably more than that. And there's little chance someone else is going to pay Jeter more than the $15 million a year the Yankees are offering. So Jeter is going to have to find a way to soften his stance while not looking like he caved.

If he leaves the Yankees I bet someone will give him the money he wants. Or the Yankees will just give in and throw him the money. I mean its only 25 million a years thats nothing

I am really interested in seeing what other teams will offer. I think Jeter would be an idiot to leave though. Why end your career on a down on a diff team for like 2 or 3 seasons?

The Yanks are telling him that. They are still paying him way more than any other team will. He would be an idoit not to take the money because no other team will pay him or even want him. He can't hit or field anymore

6/150 is absolutely insane !
I don't think he even will be a playing after 3 years....unless he buys a team.
I don't see DJ being able to switch to 3B or 2B....maybe LF ? He's no DH material either.

I really don't see where you can hide Jeter's " Gold glove" defensively ?
He could probably play 1B ( being like 6-3 +) but you need power there. His 10-20 HR don't cut it and that position is occupied by Tex. Forget 3B or 2B in the Bronx....pretty well locked in with A-Rod and Cano. Plenty of guys can play a much better LF for 10M or less.
This leaves SS as the only position left for Jeter, and he's just average there ( at best) and won't be improving defensively.
3/45 is a gift contract.
The guy won't even be in the major leagues after the 2011, 2012, 2013 seasons. Where do put him in April 2014 ?
His plusses are as a smart baserunner and having a clean image.
You can't re-reward him for his play from 1996 to 2006. He was well paid for that already !
The fans probably aren't too fond of him anymore, anyways ! If the NYY won the WS in 2010, it would be different with his worst season.
DJ started the year very nicely ( offensively) too, as I recall. So his 2nd half must have really sucked (__*__).
I can see paying a DH ( Ortiz, Ramirez Guerrero, etc.). However there are only 14 teams to play for. If you are one of these cats, you should only get half pay of maybe 10M, since you can't field anymore. A guy like a Mark Tex or a J Ham earns it with defense as well.
SCREW JETER ! He barely even belongs in the major leagues.
one year for 5M with clauses based on performance to escalate it to 50M is fine.

Perfect stance. ( Look, we gave you a VERY generous deal) Take it or leave it. We're not going to pay you on what you did... you were given a lot of money for your past play, but here's a deal ( more than you deserve) so take it.
I'd be fine with letting him walk. This lineup has so much pop as it, you don't need to pay 15 mil for a slap hitter with "class". I think a lot of Jeters attitude is phony. " Jeter doesn't complain to the umps, Jeter does this, Jeter does that".
A-Rod has his flaws, but I feel for him more and he's 5x the player Jeter is.
"But Jeter is a winner"... Yeah, and he's been on a team with the highest payroll in the league for his entire career too.

If Jeter was some 36 year old shortstop on the Marlins with the exact same stats last year, what do you think he'd earn? 5 mil?????

couldnt agree with you more about the phony attitude. guy is a fukkin prick. i have seen it first hand many times in the team hotel lobby on the road. guy treats little kids like garbage. blows right by em. all the players stop and sign for the most part. very polite. and that will come out down the road when a teammate writes a book.

They need to do some hardcore drug testing on this dude if he seriously believes he's worth that much now. I actually think this is one of those negotiating things for the press. The 'leak' says he wants this much but when his agent finds out no one will beat the Yankees current offer, Derek himself will come out and say it was all bullshit because he'd never leave NY after all the city has done for him.
I swear he lost brain cells after having Mariah sit on his face for that long. I never remember him as being this frigging stupid.

Any team that pays Jeter a dime over 15 mil is stupid.
Hal Steinbrenner means business - congrats to him for keeping it real.
SS position largely unimportant to the Yankees as a team quite frankly.
