If the NFL is about "parity" why do the same teams make the playoffs year after year? NE, PHI, IND, PIT, etc etc.Originally posted by duworkParity; nice word. NFL is all about parity. More people should see this.
The parameters are in place to have parity in the league, but not all owners/GMs/coaches are created equal. There's a reason certain teams suck every year while others contend.
Parity is a myth the NFL feeds to the herd to make them think their team has a chance every season.Comment -

#7While I completely disagree that the NFL isn't about parity, this is definitely a subjective matter. I do believe in legacy and one cannot argue certain franchises consistently succeed; however, the majority of the NFL, week in-week out is about parity, and the majority of successful sports bettors will argue that parity does play a large factor in their analysis. As I stated in the previous post, I do believe the Eagles will once again make it to the playoffs; however, I don't see them covering this week against NYG. Furthermore, I think we're looking @ this from two different perspectives - I believe you're talking more in terms of the finished project while I'm looking @ a week-to-week basis. This year alone, 'dogs are hitting around 40% SU - if that's not parity, please explain.Originally posted by bobbyk1133I just love clicking on a thread to get insightful analysis like this.

#8As the saying goes 'on any given sunday'....Originally posted by duworkI'm looking @ a week-to-week basis. This year alone, 'dogs are hitting around 40% SU - if that's not parity, please explain.
Dogs have been winning at an unprecedented rate this year, but that has nothing to do with sudden 'parity' in the league. It's the same league it was last year, and the year before that, and so on. Take a closer look at who is covering the spread and who isn't. Most of the division leaders are covering. It's easy in statistics to get thrown off by a general overall number, but once you get into the nitty gritty it's a much different story.
Did you ever consider that bookmakers know what the public perception was of teams for the 1st month of the season? More dogs covered in the 1st 4-5 weeks of the season than the last 4-5. The reason is simple. If you know a little bit about psychology you'll know that beliefs are stubborn and hard to change. It takes a bunch of evidence before we finally change our mind about something. There were many good examples of this to start the year. MIN, DAL, SF etc. The public kept betting them week after week after week thinking they would "turn it around" and play how they thought they were going to. The truth was those teams sucked and it wasn't until the quarter-way mark until people finally had enough proof to fade them.
There's a lot more involved in the results than the oversimplified reason of 'parity'.Comment -

#9I understand this and really could care less about discussing the improveable psychological angle of the bookmakers. I'll let my record speak for itself. Cap 100 games and we'll talk.
And next time when we debate I'll try to use one and two syllable words so you understand the discussion.

#13Seriously? Nice rebuttal; regular James Carville on our hands. Please don't be the guy that got beat up in high school. It's becoming clearly evident you're ignorant and have something to prove.
If so, wager 50 points on each of the two games I said you'll lose this week. It's fair enough considering they were in your write-up and on my card. In all, I take NYG +3.5 and STL +3, for 50 sbr points each - deal?Comment -

#20They are overrated because of all the hype Michael Vick is getting, however I do think they are a top 3 in the NFC. Vick is playing lights out, but he can not keep putting up the numbers he has been, and the Eagles defense is still mediocore. Once Mike Vick plays a top 10 or top 5 caliber defense, we will truely see what he is made of.Comment -

#24eagles are a nice team but they are young and at some point it will catch up. also they dont have a great D. They havent really been put to the test yet. Beat a beat up colts team and havent beaten anybody worth noting. Atlanta was a nice win but I watched that game and Atlanta didn't even show up. good team but not a championship team.
