why put any stock in workouts....emmit smith ran a 4.6 and so did Jerry Rice...both seemed to have no problem running past defenders over their career
This game is about heart and focus. You can only find that on tape and by talking to previous coaches.
The combine is a freak show and thats about all its worth. It allows front office personel to be lazy because us fans who's happiness determines whether these guys get to keep their jobs are mesmerized by these numbers.
Come on fellas the first thing you learn as a kid is that a lot of times Tarzan plays like Jane as LT so eloquently put it.
I run a 4.37; you want me to be your teams starting corner next year??
I hope not because I drink like a sailor, chase tail, and haven't worked hard at anything for longer than 3 weeks ever in my life, and get upset when my uniform gets dirty.

You have to put some stock in them. Tony Dungy said he was taught by Chuck Noll if you can get both combine numbers and college production then that is best but if you can't then err on the side of college production against good competition. It also helps that guys get put in the right position at the right time with the right surrounding cast. What do you think rice or smith would have done in the late 80s or early 90s on the bucs?

It just so happened that those guys got picked by two of the best talent evaluators ever(Johnson and Walsh).
My point was more that the guys picking the players matter much more than the players. As much as I'm disappointed by my skins recent history I am encouraged by their prowess at drafting. They are much better at drafting than picking free agents. I wish they would do more drafting than buying so that my heart can help me make it past 30.
I do agree with you on confirmation. If you like what you see on tape and the combine confirms what you saw then great. However ifyou are not impressed by what you see on tape and the guy is a freak at the combine dont be fooled.
I just watch some McFadden highlight and I'm just not impressed. I didn't see one play where he showed above average vision and with all the misdirection going on he ended up one on one with some guy who had no chance. Kudos to Houston Nutt for designing those plays. I'm more impressed by Felix Jones.

I agree some guys have a knack for picking players and some don't. Even with those guys if you they watch tape of two different guys that have similar skills and they look similar on tape then at the draft one of them runs a 4.3 and the other runs a 4.5, who are they more likely to pick if u get the chance?. That is more what the combine is for.
Johnson decided to draft Leon Lett after he watched him play basketball so they don't always go by tape of football plus guys that didn't play against top notch competition get a more up close look. In the end, it is all gut but alot of teams make a consensus pick between GMs, head coaches, scouts, coordinators, etc so u can't make somebody the total goat and somebody gets all of the credit. McFadden ran against top defenses week in and week out. I think Felix Jones is a great player but if he was that much better then he would've got the bulk of the carrries at Arkansas.

Thats just not true. Terrell Davis got no carries at Georgia and he turned out to be pretty good.
McFadden ran trick plays against top defenses week in and week out. Their is a little asterisk there. I wouldn't draft him anywhere in the first round unless I was completely loaded and could take a risk.

I haven't seen any of the combine yet, but I have been tivoing all the stuff so I can see it later. I don't think the combine makes or breaks a player, but it gives a team a chance to see how a kid will apply himself in a work ethic way as well as a mental litmus test to try and pinpoint a good player that could be coached as well as not showing up on the police bloter every wednesday morning.

long had a solid combine 37 reps on the 225 w/ a decent 40...i think it was low 5's? good movement and footwork on the oline drills too...

Sorry but TD did get carries. He had migraine problems amongst other things such plus there were a bunch of great backs at Georgia at the time. In the NFL it helped he ran behind one of the greatest lines in NFL history at Denver when Alex Gibbs put in his version of the inside and outside zone. Nobody knew how to efectively defend it.

it makes or breaks the player's salary though...players like vernon davis who probably shouldnt be taken in the first 15 picks go 7th overall and make millions more than they probably should have...all because they dominated at the combine...alan branch came in last year w/ a lot of hype too and had poor times, 225, and drills...he fell to the 2nd round when everybody had him on their first round board...cromartie is also another one of these recent players...hardly played his junior season? before going to the combine and had a good 40 time and nailed the jumps...

You got that right there diesel mechanic, more guys either blow it or make it every year because of there performance in the combine. This is because they either show a work ethic or maybe a tendency to party.

Whats with all the hate on Vernon Davis.
Did you watch any UMD games while he was there. The guy was an absolute beast.
He breaks his leg while enduring two years with Alex Smith at qb and suddenly he sucks???
Thats the same kind of thinking that allowed the Patriots to get Moss for a 4th round pick. Noone could put up numbers with that SF team. Look at poor Frank Gore this year.

Well I don't have a picking schedule at my side right now but I suspect that there is a certain team from western Pennsylvania picking in that spot. For false hope purposes, they could trade up and get him at the number 1 spot, but would have to give up a 1 and 2 along with some offensive tight end that they just got last year. I don't see any of this happening because when is the last time Pittsburgh traded up any spots much less more than 5 spots.

its not hate...i just think he got drafted a lot earlier than anybody would expect him to before the combine...he does have a glimpse of david boston in his future though...i hope not though b/c he has tooons of upside if he stays healthy...
