                    Howler Monkey Range

                    Fast Facts

                    Type:MammalDiet:OmnivoreAverage life span in the wild:15 to 20 yearsSize:Head and body, 22 to 36 in (55.8 to 91.4 cm); Tail, 23 to 36 in (58.4 to 91.4 cm)Weight:15 to 22 lbs (7 to 10 kg)Group name:TroopSize relative to a 6-ft (2-m) man:

Howlers are New World monkeys found in tropical Central and South America. They are aptly named for their cacophonous cries. When a number of howlers let loose their lungs in concert, often at dawn or dusk, the din can be heard up to three miles (five kilometers) away. Male monkeys have large throats and specialized, shell-like vocal chambers that help to turn up the volume on their distinctive call. The noise sends a clear message to other monkeys: This territory is already occupied by a troop.
These vocal primates are the biggest of all the New World monkeys. Unlike Old World monkeys, howlers and other New World species have wide, side-opening nostrils and no pads on their rumps. Howlers also boast a prehensile tail. They can use this tail as an extra arm to grip or even hang from branches—no Old World monkeys have such a tail. A gripping tail is particularly helpful to howler monkeys because they rarely descend to the ground. They prefer to stay aloft, munching on the leaves that make up most of their diet.
Howler monkeys have beards and long, thick hair which may be black, brown, or red. The red howler species is the most common, but it is often targeted by hunters eager for bushmeat. Other species of howler monkey may be critically endangered over sections of their ranges.

Raw lima beans and butter beans contain toxic linamarin, a cyanogenic glucoside—one handful of raw beans can make a person violently ill. The beans are rendered safe when cooked. Low-linamarin varieties are typically used for culinary purposes.

A rat's temperature is regulated though its tail (assuming it has one). A really hot rat will lay on its back so that it can "sweat" through the soles of its feet.

Naga Viper chili pepper set to become world's spiciest, so hot it can strip paint

The Naga Viper pepper is set to become the world's hottest.
                                      That's one spicy, paint-peeling pepper.
The Naga Viper, a cross between three of the hottest exiting varieties, is set to become the hottest chili in the world.
It's so hot that it can strip paint. And weapons experts are even considering using the chili in a "spice bomb" to incapacitate enemy soldiers, the Daily Mail reported.
The new species was created by Gerald Fowler, who runs the Chili Pepper Company in Cumbria, a small county in England.
"It numbs your tongue, then burns all the way down," he told the newspaper. "It can last an hour, and you just don't want to talk to anyone or do anything."
The tongue-scorching pepper set a world-record on the Scoville scale, which measures the heat in spicy food.
While the popular jalapeno comes in at just 2,500-5,000 on the scale, the Naga Viper measures a whopping 1,359,000. It beat out the previous world record holder, the Indian Bhut Jolokia, which measured at 1,001,304.
Fowler maintains eating the fiery pepper is good for you. But how many things that are good for you come with a waiver?
He makes customers sign an agreement they're "of sound body and mind" before sampling a Naga Viper-based curry.
"It's a marvelous endorphin rush," he said. "It makes you feel great.

Tired of BBQ chips? Here comes haggis

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Scotland's national delicacy, haggis, will soon be available to American snack hounds in potato chip form, a North Carolina importer said.
Great Scot International announced this week it would have Mackie's Haggis and Cracked Black Pepper chips on display at its booth at the annual Fancy Food Show in New York next month.
"We know that flavors with a Scottish twist are popular because Haggis and Cracked Black Pepper is our best-selling flavor," Kirstin Mackie, managing director of Mackie's, said in a written statement.
Haggis is the legendary blend of various sheep organs and parts traditionally simmered in a casing made of sheep stomach and served with great ceremony at holiday banquets and other festive Highland and Lowland occasions.
Mackie said it was able to replicate the distinct flavor of haggis, which is described as "nutty," on chips along with a shot of pepper. The chips won Product of the Year at the 2010 Scottish Food and Drink Excellence Awards.

Young Beijing Architect Lives in Mobile Egg House on Sidewalk

Acting on an impulse familiar to many people these days, Dai Haifei, a 24-year-old architect in Beijing, said to hell with high rents, and built himself a house. The six-foot-tall, solar-powered, egg-shaped abode is made of bamboo, wood and grass seed, and fits easily on a sidewalk. "The seeds will grow in the natural environment and it's cold-proof," Dai told China Daily. He then added that it's "a bit cold sometimes." Whatever. It's rent-free, dude!
