For anybody first visiting CR, I would recommend at least a week-long stay, and visiting:

        1. Arenal. This is an active volcano that spews lava almost every night. Beautiful place, and very safe. There is also several natural hot springs located around the base of it. I would recommend the Tabacon Hot Springs, www.tabacon.com, to enjoy that. Beautiful views of the mountain, and you just can't beat relaxing in the various hot pools all day long, sipping whatever beverage you want. Breathtaking place.

        2. Guanacaste. I would say that the best beaches in CR are in Guanacaste. There is an international airport in Liberia that you can fly directly into. Guanacaste is an entire province, it's not just one location. If you want luxury, there is a Four Seasons hotel. I like Flamingo and Tamarindo. Both are very touristy, but have everything you could want to enjoy your stay. If you're into nightlife, both of those places as it as well - Tamarindo more so than Flamingo.

        3. Manuel Antonio. There's a national park that that is just awesome. Not much of a nightlife; it's more for nature, but definitely recommended. It's about an hour away from Jaco.

        4. If you're wanting to party, the best beach for that is Jaco. Not really a family place, but you could get away with it. The nightlife is amazing there. A day of fishing, followed up with a night of partying. Can't beat that. Everything imaginable is available there.

There isn't a whole lot that I can really recommend for a tourist in San Jose. You might fly into here, but you'll be leaving soon after. San Jose is a pretty dirty city, and the real beauty of CR is in mountains and beaches.

December is a perfect time to go white water rafting, because the rainy season is ending now, and that'll give you another month to bring the water down a little bit more. You have to go rafting! And the other tourist things to do - like bungee jumping, canopy tours, etc.

Thats what I was going to say if you're looking to go with a wife/girlfriend, and for relaxation instead of partying.

Thanks for the write up Chili.

I'm going for the partying side. I just recently dumped the GF.

Are you looking to gamble a bunch while down there? Or just strictly partying? Going with a couple buddies or by yourself? Do you want an all inclusive so you don't have to worry about having cash on you while going to breakfast, or at the beach, then decide to hit up a little lunch or a beer?

Even with the partying, at least check out Arenal - it truly is a must see. I guess you have to decide between Tamarindo and Jaco. I would say that Jaco is better for partying. It's just out in the opening - when the sun goes down. During the daytime, it looks like any other beach town. At night, all the girls come out, the guys are out like crazy trying to sell you whatever substance you want, etc. It's also about an hour or so away from San Jose. The new highway is currently closed - it's only like 40-50 minutes with that highway, but landslides and stuff have it currently closed.

I'd say to answer ngates' post above, so we can get a better idea of what to recommend for you.

No gambling. Going solo. It sounds like I want inclusive.

The highway is STILL closed, or closed again? It was closed when I was there in early October. You really appreciate the new highway when you have to make the drive between Jaco and San Jose.

Are you dead set on Costa Rica? Lots of all inclusive places will still be pretty cheap if you go in the first 2 weeks of December.

Still closed. The landslides and the road collapsed and shit. It sucks - I hate taking that 2 hour drive now, going the old way.
