Whoever the next prez is, the US will do what spendthrift govts always do - monetize the debt. That's already happening with cheaper and cheaper prime rates, the Fed's "answer" to recession (rather than to let it run its course, and to wind down that big dollar dump known as Iraq).
The losers: those on a more or less fixed income; those who have money in CDs or other such instruments. Winners are those deeply in debt, they can pay back with cheaper dollars.
If it gets bad enough we'll see the kind of turmoil in the USA that hasn't been seen since the Great Depression. And separatist movements,never that far from the surface anyway, will raise their heads, screaming to be heard. In a number of different languages.
