I have an idea - not sure how well this will go over with most of you but here goes. I am a pretty charitable man, give where I can when I can - but like most people - I never feel like I give enough. I gamble with a local, make enough to buy myself a pizza whenever I want one, and my fiancé would kill me if I bought her SBR panties, so I really have no real use for my SBR points. I have been "investing" them for a while with the bank of ThaddeusB - but had no idea what I was going to end up using the points for - I just knew I wanted them. Then it hit me, the holidays are coming up, and the fact that I can buy things in the SBR Store using SBR points means that these points have a value, and people less fortunate than I could potentially benefit from them.
So here is my thought - I am going to collect points between now and the middle of December, I will work with Willie Bee to determine exactly how the whole gift card process works, but however many gift cards I can buy, I will buy them and give them out to charities in time for them to make use of them for the holidays. In addition to collecting and handling all the contributions, I will match 20% of whatever we collect (up to $200 for now, more if I can make some of my gambling losses up). I would LOVE to see us collect over $1,000 - but even if we only collect enough for one $50 gift card that goes to someone less fortunate - we will have done a good thing.
Now for the logistics - we can decide as a group what we buy (thinking Target/Walmart/ToysRUs giftcards because of their global reach) as well as who we give it to (some thoughts I had were USO, low-income schools, Salvation Army, Red Cross, food kitchen). We can all throw ideas out there as to who should get the money, and my thought is that as we get closer to the purchase, we will do a weighted average vote and whoever gets more votes will get the donation (essentially each point you give will give you one vote, that way the people who give the most have the most say). The only rule is that it has to be a charity or not-for-profit. As for why you can trust me with the points - you can see from my history that I don't do much with my points - I have only used a very few in the sportsbook and have about 300 points on deposit with Thaddeus' bank - so clearly I don't just frivolously waste them, plus I am offering to match with real cash, and finally - what kind of special place in hell would they set aside for me if I did all this just to scam a free t-shirt?
So it’s a thought - if no one gives anything all I am out is 25 minutes it took me to type this up - and I know we are still a ways from the holidays - but if you can help out - that’s awesome. If you know someone who has a bunch of points they don't know what to do with - point out this thread. If there are any concerns at all about the legitimacy of all of this - I would be more than happy to work something out with Willie or the mods to make sure everything stays on the up and up on this!
Sorry for the novel and hopefully you all make some money today - and remember - Karma can be a HUGE help when gambling - especially in late December when you are chasing all those bowl losses!!!
