Mike and Mike discussing contraction in multiple sports
They were discussing this morning (Fri, Oct. 22nd) the idea of contracting a couple teams in each of the major sports, minus the NFL. What I bet is a better idea: moving teams in poor markets to wealthier, more populated areas like the west coast and even more particularly the north east. Anyone know why this might or would not be feasible?

I wish they would gut the NBA----and MLB could chop off 2-4 teams too

Jacksonville needs to be moved to LA.

Pittsburgh doesn't deserve a major league baseball team, neither does Kansas City.

I guess Memphis is pretty low in the NBA, Minnesota too. Does Charlotte draw people in the NBA??

Charlotte doesn't draw anybody, but they're staying put now that MJ is in control.

Nets were last in the NBA, Memphis consistently low. They love college hoops there more than pro.

NHL could stand to lose a few for sure. The biggest problem is deciding on which teams because owners stand to lose first off, then you've got arena/stadium issues where they go vacant and violate their rental agreements with citys which is another hit. When the word "contraction" is mentioned it will take an act of God, then court cases before it ever goes anywhere.

You looked kind of smart in another thread, then you post as if you read nothing beyond the thread title? Come on, bro.

For-profit sports teams should be location roughly relative to population and income. Population map:

                      Household income:

Where do you think teams would be concentrated if you knew nothing about the America sports landscape?

I think Pittsburgh's problem has a lot to do with ownership. How could you mention those teams, btw, without uttering the Florida Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays? Who's going to want to see crappy teams, but if a team wins and few people watch them, they should move. I get the impression that many teams are located to give as many regions a claim to a pro sports team as possible, instead of what makes the most fiscal sense.

What sport, and why? You're aware that caps benefit ownership, the people who make the most money, right?
