#37Jonesy,
that was a great story. i really enjoyed it.. jonesy, i like you and i want to be your pal. we have a lot in common. man, you saw it all. i envy you. you saw the Rocket, Beliveau, Espo, mikita, hull, harvey.. you are one lucky man. i would pay all i got to have been able to see rocket and beliveau live. hockey must've been great back then.. you must have some amazing souvenirs from those great hockey days. the time when everything seemed so easy and life was great.
thanks for the post jonesy.
Thanks Nicky, I appreciate the kind words.
I'll tell you another interesting story. I myself played goal for a short while for a semi-pro team in Chicago when I was 17. My mom would not allow me to play without a mask and I wasn't going to wear the shitty little sports store mask that I had used in the pee wee leagues. This story took place during the 63-64 season.
I wanted a state of the art mask. So I asked a few questions and was told Red Wings trainer Lefty Wilson would set the mold at the Stadium next time the Wings were in town and then deliver the finished mask on the following trip after that. Didn't have to wait long cause, as you know, it was a six team league. The mask was the white, thin fiberglass with cutouts. It was the early Sawchuck model. I ended up taking a few flush on it later. But all you got was a bad bruise and a cut that required no more than a butterfly bandage.
So anyway I'm deep in the catacombs of the Stadium in the home dressing room with that goo drying on my face before a morning skate [these phuckin guys skate like demons the morning of game nights as you well know my friend ] when Chico Maki wanders in. Maki was a full blown head case. My face is covered, and remember I'm a 17 year old kid in a Holy place. Annyway I can't see anything. All of of sudden Maki starts to good naturedly start to mouth off and pulls my britches off. Now I feel shaving cream being applied to my pubes and then I feel a razor. Well I'm not supposed to move and I don't.
It stopped right there though as Eric "The Fog" Nesterenko from Flin Flon, a more serious, almost scholarly man comes in and says "Hey leave the phuckin' kid alone." You'll of course remember Nestor as the dad in the movie Youngblood. Later that morning, Glenn Hall gave me a piece of leather to sew onto a first basemen's glove. That is what he used to do back then. Used a first baseman's glove. You would also sew a strip of leather on the top finger holes for obvious reasons.
I had a car and was finally leaving the Stadium after staying to watch the skate and as I leave a guy yells out "Hey kid, can you give me a ride home. I missed my ride and I'll pay you gas money. I'll save me hefty cab fare."
It was Ab MacDonald who was now with the Hawks. I'm stuttering.... I'm so phucking excited I could piss my pants. So I give him a ride all the way to his home in the western suburbs where most of them lived. Didn't take the gas money he offered. He left me 2 great seats for that night's game instead.
I grew impatient for the mask so I drove 300 miles to the old Olympia on Grand River in Detroit to pick it up after Lefty finished it. I got there and Lefty met me and I went into the Wings dressing room. I saw a brand new set of Konesky goal pads propped up in a locker and asked Wilson if he could sell them to me. He could and did. What I bought were pads that belonged to Terry Sawchuck right out of his locker. He had yet to begin to break them in, and I payed $130 for them. On credit...dad sent him the check later, but I left with the pads. Lefty said he could replace them for Sawchuck the next day. Saw a great goalie battle that night at the Olympia. Sawchuck and Hall both standing on their heads. That was Sawchuck's last year with the Wings BTW.
Will remember that day at the Chicago Stadium till the day I die. Only played one year of the semi-pro as I signed a pro baseball contract shortly thereafter and my contract wouldn't allow hockey. But that's another story.Comment -

#39Five years riding buses, bad injuries and way too much disabled list. Catching in bases every night much tougher than standing between the pipes on the ice a couple times a week. Did make an All-Star team in a Class A league. Never played a big-league ballgame, but played against many who did. Could hold my own when healthy.
That's about all I care to say about it. More pussy those 5 years than ever again however.Comment -

#40I have always said if Blacks played hockey they would dominate like they do in football and basketball, they are too fukkin big, strong, athletic, fast, etc for a white man to compete with.
I was in Montreal and never saw any blacks other than some French Ones from Moracco or France
It will always be a white mans sport unless something drastic changes, i rarely watch hockey because clumsy white guys trying to act liker thugs/playboys gets fukkin old.
I will never forget when Sick Gambler sent me hockey tickets, I burned them in the yard.Comment -

#42Some funny comments here like the swimming comment. I just learned how to swim 3 years ago. I'm black, I support a few whities. I wear a John Elway & Chipper Jones jersey and I've been watching hockey since 92. My favorite hockey player of all time is Patrick Roy. I go to Sharks games when the Avalanche come to town. I used to play street hockey on roller blades, so I could bust white folks in the mouth. I would never ice skate and give these cracker jacks entertainment, watching my black ass fall face first on the ice. I don't know any of my brothas or sistas who like hockey. I haven't watched as much since the 03 strike/lockout thoughComment -

#54Pavy my friend, we, in Canada, are a civilized bunch. We, Canadians, do not act weird when we see or walk by a black person whether it is on the street/sidewalk or even in hockey arenas. We love everyone and let anyone enter our great country regardless of race, creed, ethnicity or nationality. Hell, we are even tolerant when it comes to homos here. Canadians are a neutral and accepting bunch................eh.
You're not "neutral", you're smug leftists who get moral self-righteous highs by appeasing minorities and actively destroying your own identity.
I bet Canada was/is jealous of the US for being so "diverse", as everyone around the world wanted to come to well off US and not obscure Canada, so the Marxist government began actively recruiting non-white foreigners around the 90s.Comment -
