The offensive line coach at St. Bonaventure High School since his son Dominic was a freshman in 2000, Roger Sonsini added recruiting coordinator to his title last fall.

        Rivals.com
CU and Texas fans wait anxiously for Darrell Scott's announcement.
That put him in charge of overseeing the recruitment of the nation's top ranked running back prospect, Darrell Scott.

"Our new head coach, Todd Therrien, also teaches four history classes," said Sonsini. "I guess he was getting so many phone calls that something had to give. He got a little frustrated one day at practice, he had enough. So he turned to me and told me, 'You are now the recruiting coordinator'. And that's how I got it.

"It's not a problem because I had been doing a lot of the recruiting stuff for our boys anyways. I had an intimate view of what it was like to be a parent and see your child go through it when my son was recruited. He is now playing at Montana State."

Darrell Scott held scholarship offers from nearly every Division-1 program in the country. So the first thing Sonsini had him do was narrow down his list.

"The recruiting process became a real problem for Darrell because, like most kids, he wanted to keep everybody happy," Sonsini explained. "He asked me if I could take some of the heat off of him and I've tried to do that for him.

"I had Darrell narrow down his school selection to a manageable five schools and once we did that, I called all the other schools and said, 'Please, no more. We appreciate it but he is not looking at you.'

"Then, as the season got going I asked him to pick two schools that he wanted to trip to before we got into the playoffs because we don't like our boys tripping during the playoffs. Darrell said he wanted to go to Colorado and Texas. He went on the Colorado visit with his mom and I escorted him on the Texas visit.

"Then after the first of the year, Darrell was going to go visit Florida. But their running backs coach left to take a job on Tennessee's staff. After that Darrell didn't really want to go to Florida anymore, he had really connected with that running backs coach. LSU was also in the mix but they kind of fell through the cracks. Coach Rick Neuheisel, the new coach at UCLA, came by to say hi to Darrell last Tuesday but it was too late for them. Now it is down to two schools: Colorado and Texas."

Scott rushed for 7,507 yards and 98 touchdowns as a prepster.
Scott has hosted multiple in-home visits with the Colorado and Texas coaching staffs in recent weeks.

"Darrell is very impressed with both programs," Coach Sonsini expressed. "He is very impressed with Coach Darian Hagan and Coach Dan Hawkins at Colorado. He loves the school. What's not to like about the University of Colorado? If you've ever been out there, you know it's a great place.

"With Texas, Darrell sees their program as a running back school. Coach Mack Brown is very well established, he really made him feel good about their program. Another thing Darrell really loves about Texas is the family atmosphere out there. He felt very comfortable out there on his visit."

Scott has not granted any interview requests since he was in San Antonio for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl back on January 5th.

"I think any young man would love to get the type of attention that Darrell is getting but he is a very quiet, shy young man," Coach Sonsini said. "A lot of people misconstrue his shyness for cockiness. Darrell is a bit of a loner, he stays within himself.

"A lot of people don't understand what Darrell has gone through. He left Florida as a young kid with a single parent and he has gone through a lot. He is just a great, great young man. Like I said, I think a lot of people misconstrue the situation."

Scott will announce his college decision between Colorado and Texas at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim this Wednesday on signing day. His announcement will be televised live on ESPNU.

                  Think so?

Pretty fearful he's headed to OSU, even though Rod's offense is built for him and he'd start immediately.

With less than 30 hours until the start of National Signing Day, coaches across the nation are walking around with increased blood pressure and a greater sense of urgency with each passing day.

The time for talk is over.

If you think the final seconds of the 2008 recruiting year are ticking away at a snail's pace, try walking in Bobby Kennedy's shoes. The Texas wide receivers coach has been the point-man on the recruitment of Ventura (Ca.) St. Bonaventure running back Darrell Scott from the very beginning and if the Longhorns are able to reel in the nation's top running back, Kennedy's profile will reach new heights.

Texas wide receivers coach Bobby Kennedy is the man behind the Darrell Scott recruitment.
In case you haven't been paying attention over the years, landing high-profile recruits in Austin has often opened up doors for bigger and better opportunities. Former Texas running backs coach Bucky Godbolt recruited Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams and helped parlay that success into long-running radio career in the Austin radio market. Back in 2002, Texas tight ends coach Tim Brewster lured Vince Young to Texas and his reputation as one of the nation's elite recruiters helped him land the head coaching job at Minnesota.

Now six years later the spotlight is on a coach that hasn't had many opportunities like this in his stint at Texas. Even though he arrived at Texas with a reputation for being a sterling recruiter and has more than backed that reputation up with strong efforts in the hotly contested Metroplex, he's yet to reel in the type of high-profile recruit that will open eyes on the national level.

Part of that simply has to do with the fact that the Longhorns don't target many out of state prospects and they almost never find themselves involved with players that wait until the very end of the recruiting process to announce their intentions.

But Scott isn't your normal prospect and this isn't your normal year.

"Coach Kennedy has done a great job with this recruitment," one source told us this week. "There are never any tricks or sideshow antics with him. He's been very straight-forward with Scott and that's how he is with his players. With so many coaches willing to tell these guys whatever they want to hear, I think (Darrell) has taken to him because he's not wired like that. He's not constantly trying to work an angle."

During Kennedy's four years at Texas, he helped Limas Sweed develop from a raw, undeveloped player into one of the nation's top players. He's largely hailed as one of the single biggest reasons for the development of former first-round pick Reggie Williams, who was a star at Washington while playing under Kennedy's eye.

As a recruiter, Kennedy helped shore up the Metroplex for Texas after some struggles in the early part of this decade. Among the players he's helped bring in during his time in Austin are Sergio Kindle, Jared Norton, Lamarr Houston, Keenan Robinson, Malcolm Williams, James Kirkendoll, Sam Acho and Blaine Irby. This year's receiver class that he's put together for the Longhorns includes potential impact performers DeSean Hales, Dan Buckner and D.J. Grant.

With little fanfare, Kennedy is starting to put together a resume that schools across the nation will pay attention to in a big way.

"This will take his reputation as a recruiter to a different level," Rivals.com recruiting analyst Jeremy Crabtree said. "He's been a coach that's made our top 25 list of recruiters a couple of times, but he's not been in a situation like this. With everyone writing off Scott to Colorado not too long ago, (Kennedy) deserves a lot of credit for even making this a race. If he signs with Texas, everyone that follows national recruiting will know about it. That could make him an attractive candidate next year for schools that are looking for young, dynamic recruiters."

So here we are with those looooooong 30 hours or so left before Scott makes his intentions known and Kennedy must sit and wait.

The official visit are done. The in-home visits are done. The only thing left is a possible phone call, but there are never any assurances that the phone will be answered at this stage of the game. The bottom line is the last word might be in.

The only thing left to do is watch the clock.

                        Tick tock. Tick tock.

If you think the last hours of this recruitment are tough for you, imagine what it's like for the person that has invested the most time, energy and emotion of anyone involved for the Longhorns.

Before there was a Ricky Williams there had to be a Bucky Godbolt and before there was a Vince Young there had to be a Tim Brewster.

With just hours to go, Kennedy can simply hope he's done enough to get the job done.

Regardless, it's been a job well done.

well scotts family, especially his mother, really wants him at Col. thats not good, but we'll see soon enough. Scott actually had a hs teammate today commit to USC.

as for this years class, texas wasnt as loaded as it typically is but they did produce the #1 S in the nation who is a 5 star talent. The kid is a future top 50 draft pick imo. he had an offer from USC. Calhoun was the big loss, but they can trump his loss if they get Scott which seems to be 50/50.

Colorado has a very good recruiting class, with or without Darrell Scott. Add that to a very young and talented team and this team will compete for a Big 12 Championship in 2009 for sure and should be pretty solid in 2008. Things are on the up in Boulder, for sure.

Col was able to keep 3 of their top 4 in state, but the league is getting tougher and Col isnt a great hs football state. Ryan Miller wa a huge get for them last year, the progam is heading in the right direction. something about Col being good just seems better for college football, i enjoyed some of their old games when they were decent. They have some good tradition and its a fun place to watch a game.

Givens and Major are nice pick ups for the 08 class. Katoa is the aa candidate first round pick type talent.

Don't forget 4* RB Ray Polk from Brophy Prep. Also word is we may have Katoa's HS teammate coming, too. Guy would have been a 4* DT but for grades. He's been doing a lot better in school and should qualify. Keni Kaufusi is his name.

Out of our WRs last year, two were freshmen (Josh Smith and Kendrick Celestine). Also, Simas was supposedly awesome in practice during his redshirt year. Although we lose Dizon at LB, Sipili comes back after getting suspended from school for a semester after a fight. He is a beast.

The ratings by Rivals and Scout are a joke, BTW. They blatantly pander to schools with more subscriptions to their site. Case in point: 3* DE Josh Williams decides to decommit from CU and goes to Nebraska. The next week he is suddenly a 4*.

rivals is a joke for some of the sec schools, but espn is even worse. hard to find truly fair grades for some of the kids, but if you watch their film you can catch a bit of what they can do. Col has the QB, i just hope they let him pass more...not sure why they dont allow him some more freedom to make plays with his arm. From there they'll have amazing lbs coming in, a good oline, and wrs...they'll just need to be able to stop someone.

Offense will be very good, especially if we get Scott. If we don't, it's not the end of the world because we have Polk and Lockridge (07 4* RB JUCO transfer PT Gates is not going to be eligible). The CU-West Virginia game is supposedly going to be a Thursday night game on ESPN. Should be pretty entertaining and high scoring, at least.

Col needs speed on defense. i had bama as my bowl poy just because they struggle so much to get a push from their front 4 and their defense looked slow at times overall. really, they just seemed kinda small. but that offense should be dynamic. one thing i noticed, they play for 60 minutes. Neb and Bama games come to mind.
