PISCATAWAY — Freshman Tyler Clementi was enrolled at Rutgers University for a little more than three weeks when he asked his roommate if he could have the dorm room to himself on a Sunday evening.
The roommate, Dharun Ravi, agreed and went down the hall to friend’s room, according to fellow students and law enforcement officials. There, he remotely turned on a webcam and — either deliberately or accidentally — watched Clementi in a sexual encounter with another man over the internet.
"Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Ravi wrote in a Sept. 19 post on his Twitter page. Two days later, police said Ravi tried to use the webcam again to catch his roommate in a sex scene. This time Ravi failed, but he told all 148 followers on his Twitter account when to log on to a live video chat to watch.
The following day, police believe Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge in an apparent suicide. A post on his Facebook page said, "jumping off the gw bridge sorry."
Today, family, friends and law enforcement officials were still trying to piece together the complex story of sex, voyeurism and social networking that ended with the arrest of two Rutgers freshmen and the apparent death of an accomplished 18-year-old violinist.
"Tyler was a fine young man, and a distinguished musician. The family is heartbroken beyond words," Clementi’s family said in a statement. The family said Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the bridge and that his body has not been found.

Clementi’s wallet was found Sept. 22 on the walkway adjacent to the George Washington Bridge’s New York-bound lanes after witnesses reported seeing someone jump, law enforcement sources said. Clementi’s car, cell phone and computer were also found near the bridge. Police recovered a man’s body this afternoon in the Hudson River just north of the bridge, and authorities were trying to determine if it was Clementi’s[/B]
Ravi, 18, of Plainsboro, and Molly Wei, 18, of West Windsor, were charged with two counts each of invasion of privacy for secretly using a camera to view and transmit a live sex scene, said Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan.
Ravi was charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for the failed Sept. 21 attempt to use the webcam to capture a second sex scene.
Ravi surrendered to Rutgers police Tuesday and was released on $25,000 bail, the prosecutor’s office said. Wei surrendered to the campus police Monday and was released on her own recognizance.
Ravi and Wei did not respond to e-mail requests to comment on the case. William Fisher, the Morristown attorney representing Wei, did not return phone calls for comment.
Steve Altman, Ravi’s attorney, said, "I’m not in a position to say anything yet because the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has not completed its investigation."
Rutgers President Richard McCormick offered condolences to Clementi’s family and said the university could not comment on the criminal case against Ravi and Wei.
University officials said they are taking the case seriously, but declined to comment on whether the students are still attending class or facing additional discipline charges on campus.
