    Can your balls wear out?
My mouse frequently studders when I'm moving the mouse slowly. There was hardly any stuff on the rolling devices inside. I cleaned what little there was on one of them the other week, which seemed to help for a little while, but the mouse is doing it again, and not just in one direction like before. Does it sound right that the ball itself is worn out? I've had it almost 6 years.

I think those balls are hard rubber, so yeah, they probably would wear out after years of use. Optical mice are cheap these days.

I remember the pain in the ass an optical mouse I used was to replace batteries with and there were issues with cursor movement. This mouse has been fine, considering I clean the inside a couple times a year, until very recently, through the almost 6 years.

ball gets worn down, so it doesn't fit perfectly in the casing. This will cause the mouse to give crappy movement.
If you are having problems with an optical, it is probably because it was a cheap optical mouse. It makes a big difference between a $5 dollar and $50 dollar optical mouse.
