I think that type A is a player that ranks in the top 20% at his position and requires you to give up your first round pick and a supplemental first round pick to the players former team. A type B player ranks somewhere in the 20-40% at his position and requires you to give up your first round pick.

I agree that would not be a terrible move....there are a few other decent pitchers still out there as well.

it seems he may get a minor league deal, but hes been awful in the winter league. here is a recent report:

ESPN's Buster Olney says he heard free agent Bartolo Colon was on the verge of signing with the Mets last week, but the team backed off after taking a closer look at the condition of his right arm.
With White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen in attendence, Colon allowed three runs and six hits in five innings in his postseason start in the Dominican Winter League on Thursday. He struck out two and walked none.

              also:

The White Sox have reportedly backed off on free agent Bartolo Colon because of his desire for a mulityear deal.
The Sun-Times believes the Royals are the favorites to sign Colon. The Mets are also believed to have backed off because of the right-hander's demands.Source: Chicago Sun-Times

Don't have to worry about the Cardinals signing any of these players, they like to sign players like Cesar Izturis, and are taling about Juan Gonzalaz, who I didn't know was still playing?

Otuska had some kind of double-secret probation surgery on his elbow about two weeks ago and I've yet to find out exactly how serious the surgery was.

It has changed a bit over the past year or so. And you'll need to be versed in legalese to truly understand the stuff. But basically, Elias comes up with the rankings of players in the A, B, C or No Compensation columns. Those rankings are used to determine compensatory settlements with teams that lose/sign a free agent from one classification or the other.

Here's a little bit from a Dec 2005 USA Today piece on Type A's:
'A' player rankings Player rankings, compiled by the Elias Sports Bureau, are used to determine what draft choices teams get as compensation for lost free agents. Below are the "A" players, who draw the following compensation:
                    • If a team that finished in the top 15 in 2005 signs another team's "A" player, it must surrender its first-round pick in the 2006 amateur draft to the losing team.
                    • If the signing team was in the bottom 15, it must give up its second-round pick.
                    • Teams that lose an "A" player also get a "sandwich" pick, which comes between the first and second rounds.
Here's a little more from a Dec 2006 piece at the Texas Rangers' MLB.com site:
If Team X offers arbitration to a Type A player who rejects the offer and signs with Team Y, Team X is awarded two compensation picks: (1) Team Y's first-round pick (if it's in the back half of each round in the next draft) or its second-round pick (if it's in the front half of each round), plus (2) a supplemental pick between rounds one and two, often referred to as a "sandwich pick."

The compensation for the loss of a Type B player is the signing team's first- or second-round pick, under the same formula, but no sandwich pick is awarded.

The compensation for the loss of a Type C player is a supplemental pick after the second round. No pick is forfeited by the signing team.

I'm sure the Type B rating is keeping some teams from having serious discussions with guys like Sean Casey, Luis Gonzalez, et al. I'm still hearing rumors that Houston might have an eye on Livan Hernandez (which shows how iffy their pitching staff is). I actually like 'Quarter Pounder,' but not so much that I want the 'Stros to give up a draft pick to get him.

The better question is... Out of all these players on this list who will the A's sign?

Oakland always seems to sign a player on the twilight of his career and gets the maximum production out of them.

some decent names on the list, but not much you can count on to produce. i remember how high everyone used to be on Green, i thought that dude was gonna be a star in the league. im also susrprised to see julio is only 29 years old, i thought he was blowing games for the os for at least 12 years.
