at this point, do you have to call it 'the right move' for SD?

Well, SD thinks it's the right move after winning the last two playoff games. Hard to justify firing a guy who finishes 14-3 though. I would guess that Marty's dismal playoff history is what ultimately did him in though.

Its all about how far you advance, not your regular season record so have to say yes, There were even some that wanted Phillips ax for the cowboys being one and done this year

the fan's have been pacified by the move, whom would you rather have long term..........give me marty everytime, this charger team will fall, and when they do it will be hard and fast. i'd give them 2 more years at or near the top and it'll be all downhill from there, norv's riding marty's players for all they are worth and once they are gone his ass will be toast.

the chargers are done? LT might lose a step, trade him in a year or two. Call me crazy but why keep a player that is the best in his position and will be "aging"? Anyone seen Shaun Alexander lately? I heard he's in the WTB threads looking for his game.

They have 2 skilled backups that many teams would trade for. Chargers need to trade someone in that backfield in the next year.

Gates is awesome, Chambers aint bad, rivers is good enough, there D is solid. If they draft well they can stay a playoff team for awhile.

ABSOLUTELY MO,this is the furthest they have been since '94!
I am happy for Norvelle,i love to see someone that is hounded, vilified and put down like Norv was(& still is)stand tall as he did and prevail.Even if they fire him ,he has been vindicated and will get another job.

There was a power struggle between Schottenheimer and GM Smith.

Owners had to decide. And since GMs build a team, the decision was easy. Marty (5-13 in postseason, and asking for a big raise and a son added to the coaching staff) was justifiably shown the door.

Note that as of this writing Marty has not landed another HC job.

LT has a long-term and fat contract. He'll retire as a Charger. Geez, Hillary was right, there is a lot of misinformation on the Net.

LT will net the most trade value in return to replace key players retiring eventually. Like there legendary FB, Upgrade WR, and keep the Defense dominating.

But both Charger Backups could net draft picks. They have 3 backs that could potentially start in the NFL on there depth chart...

LT might have a "phat" contract but so does Shaun Alexander. your best of trading/cutting your ties a year or two early than 1 year too late.

                      Chargers won't trade Tomlinson.

If he still wants to play at end of his longterm contract (which I'm sure has a "no-trade" clause) and injuries and age have slowed him, they may cut him as other teams have done under the cap situation to "beloved by fans" players.

But no, no trade. You very seldom see trades involving top players in the NFL. Draft choices are traded, seldon players.

Norv turner Chargers fans booed him earlier in the regular season.. Now their all over his nuts.. This guy just beat the colts in the playoffs in indy and has a chance to pull off the biggest upset of the year by beating the patriots.. And I do feel they have a shot at it..Great move for the chargers.. Well done.

Unless the Chargers can beat the Pats, Norv hasn't done anything that Marty could've done with this same team. But, the front office can at least breathe a sigh of relief that the Chargers got this far in the playoffs because now the firing doesn't look like quite the catastrophe that it might have been.

Pretty obvious Marty was cursed after last season miracle loss to Pats. Marty is a good coach but cursed as hell.

SD lost it's QB,RB and TE. Refs took away 7 points on a phantom holding call that never existed. Numerous bad calls by the refs.. Plus the game was at Indy.

Indy just got outplayed by a better team.

My point is Norv had nothing to do with that win and how many times have you seen Indy Fumble and miss easy catches that much?I was on SD plus the points and loved it,but I definetly think Indy played a shit game.

I think that game really hinged on Marvin coming back and making a real contribution. After the Marvin fumble, my air really went out of my sails. Watching Marvin on the sidelines with the game on the line was really the final straw.
