I saw this movie 10 years ago when it came out and went to see it when I was a bit of a neo con and hooked up with this politically correct commie lib academic elitist editor type babe.I really didn't get a good chance to evaluate it because she kept saying it was revolting and sexist and racist and ist this and ist that.I probably thought it was more vulgar too because it was told of you to say it about stuff like that which was really outrageous.
OK,gonzo journalism and Hunter S.Thompson were off the wall, freaky to the max, rewarded for being totally drug crazed and all of that good stuff but if you watch the movie,it's a hoot.
It was just on Cinemax this morning and it was an 1.45 minutes of laughing so hard I almost peed my pants.Even though I was 10 years removed from the flower children, hippie, yippy Viet Nam protest generation as a kid,I remember a bit about it but never realized how bizarre and outrageous it was.
It was great where the movie really did make Vegas look like it did back in the 60's.It was so clown car cartoonish back then where these bizarre freaked out hippies like Thompson just sort of blended in being a side show act.
If you watch all the props, set locations etc.in this movie that add to the outrageousness of the times you will come away with a new perspective on this movie how it was genius in many ways.
I'm sure some parents wouldn't want their kids to see it thinking it glorifies drug culture and humorizes it but in my opinion I think it humorizes it and sends a message that things like this really happen to people that whacked out.hehe! What an absolute living hell hole some people put themselves in and live in.
I know a whacked out guy that I grew up with that looks, acts and talks like Chong from Cheech and Chong and one night him and this broad he picked up in a bar were so whacked out where she showed up dead on his basement floor the next morning and he absolutely didn't know what happened. He could have pushed her down the stairs in a drug stuper and if he took a lie detector test he probably would have passed it because he couldn't remember. They had to let him off the hook for it and passed it off as accidental.
